Blackpowder
I am just off to a local gunsmith with my newly aquired John Dickson R/A and thought I would take a photocopy of my certificate and low and behold as it emerged from the printer it has FRAUD in large letters right through the guns owned section. phaedra1106
I carry copies of my SGC and FAC and both scanned without a problem. I do howerever print "COPY" in very large letters all over them.
woodcock11
Nope - it is to stop forgery - photocopying and changing names etc. Standard practice these days. If out shooting, I sometimes take a photocopy anyway with me [plus driving licence etc as proof of identity] and keep the original cert safely at home to produce later if asked. However, a photocopy or faxed copy is NOT acceptable if flying or going on a car ferry. - hope that helps

Tonyc
Although I carry photocopies of FAC/SC in the car I picked up a hint from another forum and photographed the front pages with my phone so I have good readable copies on there as well. Catweazle
Colour photocopiers have firmware that can recognise bank notes and refuse to copy them. Some older ones didn't have this feature. I advertised an old Xerox colour copier on eBay and someone came all the way from Albania in a van and gave me £1600 in cash, which I checked very very carefully. Blackpowder Thames Valley have been doing this for some years, ironically, if the copy says fraud, it shows the cert is legit! It should say it on all pages, and if you look very closely at the original you will probably be able to make it out as well!

apache
Black and white it says it but not if I do a colour copy. Carrying anything other than the original certificate is meaningless. From your name and DOB they can check whether you hold SGC/FAC. Giving them a number out of your phone or squinting at your screen won't keep anyone happy. Usually take mine with me because IF you were asked the police have every right to cease your guns until you can prove you have suitable authority to have them. The ONLY proof is the original cert. I think that is a bit far reaching, carrying a copy serves many purposes, and I can assure you many officers don't have a clue what a FAC/SGC looks like. Thers is also the Natiional Firearms Database these days which will also give plod a good idea you are legit!
welshwarrior
The point of the national database is so any copper can check you should not need to have your certificate but you would need ID to prove it's you. As said most of them don't know what FAC or SGC look like I had a nice chat with a local copper while lamping he sat in the car with me shared my flask was very interested asked if I need a shotgun cert for my rifle. "said I had a SGC did he want to see it." he had a look was happy I then showed him the difference with my FAC and ammo holding, open condition etc
Drayman
It was my FEO (Surrey) who said I didn't need to carry my certs while out shooting. If the police wanted to know about me they would just call in my ID and check. I only carry them when I know they will definitely be needed - certain clay grounds, buying ammo etc. Other than that I don't want the hassle if I lose one. Also, if someone calls in to say there's a man with a gun the likelihood around here is you'll get an armed response unit turning up. They usually pop in to the local beauty spot cafe for a morning cuppa, complete with side arms! Each to their own. Who have you got in Surrey I have David when he issued my wife her SGC he told her she had to carry it whenever she carried the gun. Interesting different policies from the same force!!!!!!! Drayman
I think it's Andy - to be specific, the discussion was only about shooting over my permissions and not a general statement. But that said, Surrey seem to have been generally very good and helpful and recently turned around my renewals in quick time. They've also granted a new SGC to a mate of mine and that went through very quickly, even with the Christmas / New year break.
welshwarrior
Agreed they are very quick my renewal took 3 weeks father inlaws took 5 months in west Mercia!!!
