Quick rant so i can get the Victor Meldrew moment out of my system!!

Just had a knock at the door.

Guy dressed in a 'jogging suit' with a dispatch case (not that it has any real relevance) who was trying to give me to sell or to sell me a book of Help for Heroes (what appeared to be) raffle tickets.

Having just got in from a run and holding on to a baby i politely said i was busy, and pointed out the big yellow no cold calling and we do not buy or sell at the door sign, and that i support H4H anyhow through a different means i was met with a barrage of ''Its ******* Help for Heroes for ***** sake'' and Selling raffle tickets isn't selling at the door.

At that point i terminated the conversation by shutting the door only to hear him ******* and Blinding and telling me to F off and the whole estate is the same all the way down the drive.

After speaking to my mate who is a few doors the other way, he had virtually the same.

To top it all off, i have the whole episode on CCTV

Im not knocking the charity or the idea of door to door for the cause, but its public image has taken a bashing tonight, and to be told to **** Off at my own front door is something else!

Im glad i had a baby in one arm and a bottle in the other!

UPDATE:- LOOKS LIKE IT WAS A CHANCER - SEE POST #27

Had the same from a guy selling car cleaning stuff. As my misses works for wurth who supply the automotive trade, I politely said no thanks and got a torrent of abuse!!!

If I were you I'd report it to H4H and the plod if they know nothing about him

Probably a local toerag trying to make some easy money.

Possibly, I have E-mailed H4H to ask if they had anyone in the area tonight, i thought about ringing the Police, just to report that someone was door knocking and being abusive, but by the time my brain kicked in and i realised it could well have been someone 'trying it on' it would have been too late anyhow

Because its so unbelievable to be told to eff off on your doorstep by a friendly charity. Have you ever heard of anything like it before!

Yep I can believe quite it easily. I've had grief from all sorts of people giving it the hard sell on the doorstep, especially chuggers working for "friendly" charities. I'm a veteran with 23 years service and a huge supporter of HFH and the great work they do. That doesn't mean everyone rattling a tin for them is a good bloke, and as other have said he could just be a local chancer trying to make a few quid. All far more plausible to my mind than the possibility that a forum member would just make the whole story up :/

Just spoke to the local Police Station who have logged the incident.

They said it may have been a 'chancer' who had got a pile of tickets from an organised event, and did i see an ID card (to be honest i didnt look)

It is apparently a common problem, especially around Children in Need and Red Nose Day and the like. Most genuine door callers (charities and religious groups included) apparently mostly heed the no cold callers and we do not buy or sell stickers, but 'chancers' see them as a possible soft or vulnerable target worth a try.

They said they may want the CCTV footage and could i retain it, but as it is only framed and its at night they said it would more than likely be useless (due to the quality of the images recorded on home systems makes it difficult to zoom in and retain any form of usable resolution, unless they were looking for a man made of lego!)

i think i would inclined to call H4H and ask them if he was legit either that show teh cctv to the local long arm of the law and i bet ya a pint they say ah thats dodgy dave the local chancing low life scum bag trying to fiddle the charity out of cash!! i cant honestly imagine any legit charity volunteer ever behaving in such a disrespectfull manner

I have no idea about H4H, but I believe that some people who collect for charities aren't "volunteers" at all - they do it for % of what they collect.

It seems wrong at first, but the charites would argue (with some justification) that it makes commercial sense. Almost all of them have overheads to pay and it is not really any different to the big charities paying for TV ads etc.

I would guess that some of the more "in your face" tin rattlers are on this scheme.

A lot of charities get agencies to do the door to door work and employ all sorts. ihad a conversation with a door knocker from the rspca, he got 300 a week plus £10 for everyone he managed to sign upto an £8 per month direct debit, the agency got given x-amount a month and each person had to get at least 1 sign up a day, cheek *** said i could cancel it after the first payment as he would get paid anyway.

I would hope hfh would operate differently

i didn't sign up as i can't stand the rspca but that's for another thread

Chuggers. Scumbags - no time for them after seeing a few trying to bully vulnerable old people who weren't interested, into a direct debit they probably couldn't afford, just so they could get their commission. I intervened. I don't thing HfH use this tactic, as there is enough public support and goodwill towards them without it. I quite like winding these people up, by asking them how much of my money would bypass the charity go to their agency if I signed up. Any charity that uses these people goes down in my estimation, they're unethical IMHO. Much better going to the charity direct, yes they have overheads but at least a big percentage isn't being syphoned off by the charity mugger agency.

I had a girl knock on my door a while ago, she said she was collecting for a charity that relocates urban foxes to the countryside. Apparently to some utopia where there are lots of forests and no farmers. I politely declined to provide my bank details.

Re the h4h thing a mate of mine is doing pr for them at the moment, I will mention to him, sounds like a chancer to me.

You have had a rough time - I have never heard of Help for Heroes authorising anyone to do door - to door. They are an immensely worthwhile and successful charity where all sorts of people, organisations and companies help them to raise truly staggering sums of money to help our servicemen who have sufferedv horrendous injuries in carrying out their duties for Queen & Country.

I suggested last year that they should benefit from the P/W north v south clay pigeon match - the organisers - rightly so - declined as they thought that Help for Heroes were doing so well and decided that other equally worthy charities should benefit.

Whilst I cannot be 100% certain - I think you have had a horrid experience with a lowlife who is trying to surf and swindle people for his own benefit. You have made a good call to advise the local police.

Even if Help for Heroes did door to door [which I do not believe] they would not use abusive characters like the person who called on you.

You have had an upsetting experience - do please let us know what you hear and in particular from Help for Heroes - they are such a deserving cause and don't need to be plagiarised or conned by people purporting to be collecting for them.

I've done a lot of work with HfH over the past few years and can honestly say I have never experienced them authorising any door to door 'selling'. I can't say 100% sure but I have done a large number of charity events on their behalf and not once heard of them doorstep selling anything. Not to mention that IF someone was collecting from the door - I would assume they would be 'selling' HfH memorabilia and not raffle tickets...

I know my post isn't exactly constructive but just wanted to explain that even if it was authorised, it most certainly is the exception and not the rule.
