955i
Does anyone know whether this is a do-able job without getting a technician in as my washing machine has just gone bang

AVB
Also many are designed nowadays not to be replaced (glued in) so a new drum is required. Then it's a toss up between a new drum and a new machine.
StuC
I just took out a warranty with Indesit after my washing machine went belly up. The motor failed and for me to source a new one it was £100. Called indesit and it was £120 all in for them to do it or £11 per month for a years all inclusive cover (original quote was £14 per month, so I haggled). Thought it was a pretty good deal so took it out.

fruity
There a bit of a challenge but doable, i did our hotpoint and on my model you literally had to strip the whole machine to get the drum out, then split the drum in two halves to get to the metal spider pulley on the back were the bearings was,i took photos as i took it apart just in case. Parts cost me around £40 and took best part of 6 hrs to do the lot but good as new now

bruno22rf
How old is the machine-how much did it cost and did you buy it new? BTW-a lot of machines dont have replaceable bearings anymore-you need to replace the drum.
BerettaSV10
When I did mine I had to strip the machine to get the drum out. Once the drum was out the bearings could be removed then found the spider was worn as well, then had to cut the rivits to seperate the spider from the drum. Replace the bearings with good quality ones and I just used bolts, nuts and lock washers to re-attach the new spider to the drum.

Good point that i thought mine was like that ,but lucky enough the bearings could be changed not replace the whole drum

point and shoot
It's not worth it. Throw it away and buy a new one. The cheapest there is that will do what you want. All the important bits are the same anyway!
Dougy
Dont believe in paying extended warranty. You have 12 months to start with. then get asked to pay out another 100 + a year.. I must have been lucky,i have only had 2 washing machines in 18 years. Mind you i only by the simple type, not the ones with flashing lights and god knows what on.Cleans just as good. as above just buy another Edited February 26, 2012 by Dougy
BIG 5
My Hotpoint is 10 years old now and the bearing is making a terrible noise on fast spin. After reading this its going to the tip.

Its easy to do IF you have a video to watch, otherwise rebuilding an entire washing machine from memory is daunting. Was a year ago and its still working
bruno22rf
Check your consumer rights on this one-extended warranties are going to come back and bite insurance companies like PPI is at the moment-you have up to 6 years to claim if your machine goes belly up depending on various factors (price.use etc).Had my machine fixed free just last week and its near 2 years old. kev56
I have changed a couple of ours over the years, now i wouldn't bother. If as said you are quoted £100 plus pounds for the job or you do it your self by buying a complete drum assembly + all the fiddling about. For £150ish you can buy a new machine.
