hedd-wyn
Right then gents. Got some crow decoys today (5) A camo net, and a crow caler (acme, not electronic!) Plenty of willow around so poles aren't a problem. I'm thinking of going for a blast Saturday morning, the mountain lambs have started slightly early in out parts, and the owner on my permission is getting a little worried. I've figured out the crows flight line, and have probably ****** the whole street off practicing my crow calls. I won't be shooting on a nice flat open field, it's mostly hilly, and valley terrain (if this makes any difference at all) Could any of guys give me any tips or suggestions on how to set things up please?.... Without having to spend any more money??? (times are hard) If this has already been covered, then I do apologise but I have searched, but couldn't find anything. Many thanks Hedd

magman
Spread your crow decoys a good distance apart, one on a fence post wouldn't go a miss Put a dead Rabbit by one also
soother223
it can be that simple but not always.. make sure you know their patterns & turn up at the right time... i take it you know all about wind & what direction they come in from etc? cos you dont want em coming in over your head! make sure the sun's behind you cos their eyes are far sharper than woodies! also I like to keep a good few feet between my deaks what I have noticed is that they can be in one place all wk & then a change in wind direction or weather & they will be somewhere else... Sharpshooter.123
Iv always shot crows like that, 5 decoys 1 of which on a fence post and a sliced open rabbit near another decoy and spread them well out 10-15 ft apart and call away
silver pigeon 3
As above, spread the decoys out a bit, one raised on a post if available is a good idea. If no dead rabbit available i have found a few bits of red meat (mince etc) by one of the decoys seems to draw them in. Make sure the hide is well made, make use of natural hide materials to break up the outline of the hide as the crows will otherwise spot you from a mile off. Have fun and try to let the crows come in a bit before you shoot, leaving plenty of time on any ones that are trying to get away after the first shot
eccles
Hi Hedd best advice i can give you mate is to set up where the farmer is feeding the cake to the stock.Put deeks out as others have said and don't move a muscle until in range.Down here the farmers keep coming back to feed stock when i'm shooting for them.Every time they see the quad coming back they come, shot loads as soon as he's left.Best bag this way 130+ carrions in 3 hours.Hope this helps Ps i use 10 deeks 2 floaters and add dead birds. rapid basher
has one of the guys said floaters work well,, and get well camo"d up face vail and gloves are a must as you look up thayl spot you a mile away if not
soother223
yeah good advice on a lofted crow! when i bin shootin em on the corn fields an there a bales around i always stick one on top! makes a hell of a difference! but dont be tempted to stick one on the hedge behind you! you dont want them looking your way.. you want something to attract them & then distract them
utectok
I set up 16 deeks in small groups of 3 or 4 a couple of bouncers (hypa flappers) decent net hide and sit still! Don't call to much and use hello calls (a couple of calls) not alarm ones (seven or so sharp calls).
Cottonseed
Lots of good advice above. Only thing I'd add is that I've always had the best results by getting into place as early as possible, preferably before daylight.

hedd-wyn
Thank you gents, lot of great tips there. Have had a good look on google maps today from birds-eye view and have found a great spot to set up. Will get there by six on Saturday morning to set up, and have been fortunate enough to get hold of six more decoys on the cheap (courtesy of Gwynedd Firearms) Checklist 1) Camo net, plus poles 2) 15 decoys 3) Crow caller 4) Camo clothing, plust face cover and gloves. 5) Some patience 6).... I'm sure there's a six?..... Oh aye, shotgun The only thing I seem to be missing is a dead rabbit will have to improvise I think with some lambs wool and some corned beef If I've missed anything out, please let me know. Cheers Hedd PS nice one Eccles, will be giving your technique a blast next week on the other side of the permission
Big Marty
Tried a few times with not much success until an old Gun from beside me told me to put a couple of coys on a fence or bush made a big difference and have used it ever since..

moor man
Hi Hedd-wyn, got two crow calls left in 'for sale' section if your interested, ive had some success with mine. If theyre not spooked theyll come and investigate, just make sure youre well hidden, also try chucking some eggs in with the decoys. Tried a stuffed sparrowhawk too, they were definately interested in that, just a bit delicate for the field though. Good luck.
henry_o
Hi Hedd-wyn If you want some crow decoys on the cheap the try putting a black sock over a pigeon decoy. I do this with good success. Then when you've downed a dozen crows swap the dead ones with the sock decoys. It saves a having to buy expensive crow decoys! Henry

happypig
How would putting a pigeon decoy over your trainers help get you into a club?
hedd-wyn
How would putting a pigeon decoy over your trainers help get you into a club? Because certain clubs have dress codes, no jeans and no trainers. If you put socks over your trainers the bouncer wouldn't notice because they were dark.
