I reguarly try my hand at clays, pigeons and wildfowling, i was even lucky enough to bag a roe deer on an accompanied stalk earlier this year. But i'm still very much learning each time to go out.

Well done Markio , you should be well and truly hooked on stalking .

how many people have actually shot a deer ,pigeon, fox or game bird . We seem to have many experts who all ways seem to quote advice from books and American comics or from INTERNET sites . Lots of replies to questions from members seem to be the well rehearsed and researched answers from the media and from books . How many experienced field sportsman do we have on here? I will tell you what ,I know who they are ,do you ?

Harnser .

i can kinda agree, but from a reloading point of view. i`ve heard a lot of carp about it. [not on pw] here is a list of advice i was given about shotgun reloading.

"if it goes bang, its ok "

"use newspaper as wadding"

"use a teaspoon for clays and a tablespoon for game" [powder measure]

"use 3 drams of nitro"

"the cartridge companys tell you how much powder they have in them 30g [30 grain]"

"all cartridges have one ounce in them, they are just lying"

"6s are good for geese, esp in lead"

"all powders are safe, why would the government sell me something that could hurt me?"

"you need really fast cartridges"

"i can only get 40 shots out of a pound of powder"

"lead comes from church roofs"

i`ve done some game shooting, rifle too. but my passion is reloading shotgun

-wading through the bull thats spouted by others. i want the next generation reloader to get the best start. i can make the difference.

not many people realise that shooting 1100-1200 fps is pretty much the optimal reloading speed. its really easy and cheap to achieve. you get good patterns, even with fibre plastic /other wads.. all you need to do is select a shotsize from 2s-4 for hares, 5-6s pigeon/rabbit, 7s-9 for clays.

who cares that you are shooting game with whatever slightly larger cartridges, there is no cartridge police. i burned off aload of 2s on rabbits, they were great, almost a 1-1 shot ratio.

i`m not an expert at reloading, but i hve chopped up a few comercial shell, whats in the shell and what the shell is supposed to be are sometimes 2 different things.

Its an interesting one Harnser and indeed the "experts" who know everything are putting people off coming on here.

I was particularly shaking my head at some of the walts even getting there ego stroked by others on one recent thread...

I would say in the interest of curiousity and political correctness you should name the good'uns not the bad'uns.... :good:

I think i have figured out roughly who has done what - I think everyone has a skill set - I know what i feel are my weak and strong points - but it seams some bang on about the same **** over and over....

I have seen a primer only IE pulled round and charge to clear a .22 LR in the field but its very reckless and such advice as firing a full HMR charge sounds very scarey to me. Perhaps this thread should be deleated?

We have moved on from there, the OP has been more specific about bad advice being posted.

Judging peoples experience from what they choose to share on the internet is a whole different, and contentious issue.

Moved on? are we that worried about upsetting someone by saying who's advice someone may value? :hmm:

everyday we make a judgement on who in our opinion we are ok to take advice from - and that can be someone who we have never met, I actually think it would be interesting to see who's opinion certain people value - especially someone like Harsner who has been in this game a while...

So you aren't going to name them then?

How could you claim to know who shoots and who doesn't?

What's to say there aren't people on here who shot all the time and just don't talk about it :hmm:

Sorry to be so negative but it's a fairly ridiculous thread if you think about it.

I shoot a few times a week, but im just too lazy to post anything about it

I reguarly try my hand at clays, pigeons and wildfowling, i was even lucky enough to bag a roe deer on an accompanied stalk earlier this year. But i'm still very much learning each time to go out and i'm certainly no expert!

Thats right, and i still think your a cheap *** who wont buy his own lighter  What! you think i had forgoten? ;) Im bringing you a whole packet to the next shoot

Maybe I am just a grumpy old man and need to sit back and clean my guns and wait for god .Harnser .

That's exactly what you are and I am not embarrassed to say that I strive to meet your exacting standards every minuet of the day.

Like an aged Norfolk blackthorn, you are becoming prickly, somewhat bent from the wind and a little gnarled. Fear not though, you like I were young many summers ago when we to could run before we could crawl and not only did we know it all but we used to ridicule the old for the daft advice they gave.

Just sit back in your rocking chair, doze off and dream of the great big stags, the 500 yd rabbits and the ruddy great coypu you shot and killed, stone dead, at 325 paces with your trusty .17HMR because that's where most of the drivel comes from...........dreams.

Why doesn't the op do what he said and name and shame the people who he refers to as 'walts' or the people who offer advice who don't know what their talking about.

You said you could name them so name them. Or are you one of those who says things but doesn't actually have the 'experience' to back it up.:lol::lol:  :no:

The funny thing is the longer you've been on here the more you work out who does shoot and actually know what they are talking about. You then have their posts lost in a load of dribble from some who think they know everything there is to know. If you listened to some you'd never take a shot because of 'safety' then you have the dubious advice then you have the everyone should have a ******* hornet advice.

The sad thing is the very good advice that gets lost and the posters stop posting. Its surprising just who is on here in the shooting world-

It's probably worth remembering that many of us on PW know each other (in real life not just PW) in certain areas for example, Essex, Herts and the Cotswolds and quite a lot of us talk shooting all the time when we see those people, so sometimes PW 'off topic' is a place to relax away from the details of shooting, but with like minded people.

Many answers never seem to have a photo to back up the advice, however there are lots of 1 pigeon and 1 squirrel pictures, so I guess that is half way there……:D

On a serious note... I work odd, long and very lonely hours... apart from when I see clients I am usually stuck in my office alone doing something or another, more often than not very mundane..

No office banter, don't go out, I have good friends but none I socialise with due to distance or mismatching work commitments..

Pigeonwatch is my only real social life... I think I'd go bonkers without it and I see many of you on here as more than just forum aquaintances, whether we have met or not!
