Crow/Jackdaw Bashing

After the farmer phoned me earlier this week, to say that there were 1000's of Crows on his land, eating all the Oats, I went up yesterday morning straight from work to see for myself. There were'nt 1000's there, but at least 5-600 mixed Crows/Jackdaws. I told the farmer that we would be up this morning to have a crack at them.

I met my mate, Mark (the poacher) at 7am, and we drove up to the top field to set up our hide etc. The farmers son said he would spread some Oats on the field for us at around 9.15am. When we arrived at the top field, we could see many birds on the surrounding fields, although not as many as there were the previous morning. While waiting for the birds to arrive, there was one Crow on the field, at around 70 yards. I shot it with my 17HMR,hit it, but it flew to another field approx 300 yards away, then dropped down dead. Both Mark and I decided to leave it where it was.

A few Crows came into our pattern of decoys, and we shot 2. We used them on floaters. Afterwards, the Oats arrived and were spread out where we requested, but most of the Crows had vanished after the couple of shots we fired. For the next few hours, we had the odd Crow coming into the pattern, and many Jackdaws, which we dispatched. We also missed 'a few' too! We enjoyed the rare sunshine, and just sat in the hide, chilling out, apart from when the birds came in. At around 1.30pm, everything went quiet, and we stayed until 2.30pm. We had a good half day out, with some testing shots, some great weather, and a damn good laugh.

We ended up with 33 Jackdaw's and 5 Crows, including the one which I shot with my 17HMR earlier.

The photo's show our decoys, which were a mix of artificial and dead birds. some of the land which we shoot over, where we set up the hide, and the end result.

My thanks to Mark for a great time out, and a good laugh as well. Hopefully, we'll get some more soon.
