roughshooter
Just loaded a rake of plaswad clay shells up and now want to roll some fibre wad 7 1/2's for the odd local shoot. I have exhausted my supplies of Nobel 80 and 82 and have no Vectan powders left. Whilst I have shed loads of data for plas wdas I have none for the American powders with fibre wads and RTO's/ I have Red Dot, Unique, Blue Dot and Longshot (The last two being for heavier rounds) Anyone have any fibre info? seeker
any help http://forums.pigeonwatch.co.uk/forums/index.php?/topic/186023-reloading-using-fibre-wads/ I understood RTO has the same load as crimped? ... all things being equal .... I get similar speeds in my 28 gauge loads for both roll n crimp using same data.
sitsinhedges
My understanding was that fibre wads generate lower breech pressures than a plaswad if using an overpowder card underneath but roughly the same as a plaswad if using a plastic obturator because they seal better. Also that a normal RTO generates less breech pressure than a crimp because it doesn't hold the pressures back so much before opening. If this is the case, working out a few recipes to use shouldn't be difficult.
Guest cookoff013
rough, i`d use a reddot recipe that has a high psi, fibre wad and roll turn will change the ballistics. as for the rest of the powders, they are too slow to be using fibre, especially in the 12gauge. roughshooter
I have found a few for Red Dot in 1 oz on the american forums and plenty of Unique in 1 1/8 and 1 1/4 Oz loads. I am happy to play a little as I know the pressures will be lower using a nitro card and fibre wad!! Will load a few up later but if anyone has 10kg of Nobel 80 they want to sell just let me know Regards Graham

roughshooter
It depends what I can fit into a 65mm case - I have used a lot of red dot in 28g loads with plaswads and they seem very effective and certainly the powder meters extremely well as opposed to the bulkier powders! I have a whole lot of new Eley cases that I want to use up as well as some cheddites - they take up a lot less room when they are loaded! roughshooter
I found some data from the 1966 Lyman reloading book and loaded some fibrewads into a 65mm cases with 22 grains of Red dot, NC12 and 20mm Fibre wad, 1 1/8oz 71/2 with a frangible disc and a rto. I only loaded a few up to test as time was limited but it certainly performed well if not a little on the punchy side but of course cartridges were always loaded a little heavier in the old days! roughshooter
Try some unique, lovely smooth cartridges,a bit dirty maybe because its a slow powder. I have half a tub of Red dot left then I will be starting on the Unique - I had been saving the unique as it is a bit more versatile than the Red dot and will load the 16g as well. From the data I have seen it seems to be a great powder

Try Shooting supplies in Bromsgrove- Not far from you Roughshooter. They stock Hogdon's and Alliant. Not sure what they have at the moment as I haven't bought any for a while.
