SPARKIE
can you get special ammo for shooting foxs with a shotgun and what killing range will the shot have.cheers sparkie
Paul223
IMHO bb's out to about 25 to 30 yards, may be 40 at a push and the fox is side on, walking or still and remember your back stop!

Mungler
Just out of interest, what's the difference between No. 1 shot and BBs. Also how much are they (for both types)?

pin
IMHO bb's out to about 25 to 30 yards, may be 40 at a push and the fox is side on, walking or still and remember your back stop! I'd say anything from No2's to 4's really. I'd say 40 was way too far, too. 32g or better. Imvho BB's too big for any kind of range, fox sized holes in the pattern. sussex lad
36 grms of 3's half choke good for 40 yards max:good:
young gun
I've used 42grms of 3's and 36grms of BB's and both work fine i havn't had a problem with loosing the pattern on BB's but i've heard that if you use to tight a choke with BB's it causes the pellets to clump together due to there size so you loose a lot of pattern. apparently half choke is best and will have the effect of full choke. Marc M
I've just gone through the same thought process after spotting foxes on my rabbit shoot. Ended up buying some Eley Alphamax 36g BB's. Sod's bleedin law though, since I've had the heavier shells I haven't seen a fox at all on the shoot. Good job I'm a patient man...
miffy
65Grain of hornady Vmax pushed through a .243 barrel does the job for me

Been using bb's since 1990 and at ranges less than 30 yards they have never let me down!?( my sbs is chocked xfull and xfull ) as for no 4's way to small, IMHO I've just gone through the same thought process after spotting foxes on my rabbit shoot. Just keep a few fox shells in a separate pocket! Miffy 55grain nosler bt in the .223 is pretty good too!
bobt
I homeload AAAs 27 pellets (I count them in) will bowl a fox over at 40 to 50 yds, and slowed one down enough at 70yds to get closer and finish it.

I'm a big fan of Remington 3.5inch BB's through my Remy 11-87, knocked foxs up to 50 yards with ease!!
henry d
I`ve said it once.......and I`ll say it again,if you can get hold of them and if you have a gun that they fit Win XXX 3" mag in No.2`s(nearly UK BB`s)which are buffered and pattern like a dream. As for distance.........how far are you competent to shoot and how does the gun/cartridge pattern at that range?
bobt
I patterned my AAA homeloads at 40 yds, a fox would not get through the gaps.

bertie2
I just use any magnum cartrage in 1,2 or 3 shot.
leeboy
I use 3" 50gm solway magnum BBs for charlie out to 35/40 yds and they are exremely effective. I've only had one runner in the last 21 foxes I've shot, and the second shot sorted that. I also use 42 gm #1 shot these are also excellent to 30/35 yds. In my experience shooting at foxes past the 40 yd mark will not ensure a clean kill and the number of runners will be high. I dont do it ! #5 and #6 shot 15yds max. AAA are fantastic out as far as your gun will pattern well but that is likely to be 20/25yds if you are lucky. SG as above but pattern blows quickly probably 20yds. It is well worth test patterning your gun as every gun shoots a given load differently. IMHO you cant beat BBs with #1 being a close second. Preferably with as heavy a shot load as you can handle. Dont over choke unless a tighter ckoke works well in your gun. Leeboy
wacker
AAA's or BB's.
badsworth
Lyalvale do a 3", 50 gram, BB round called 'Max Game Magnums' which are designed for longer range foxing. They give one hell of a kick (don't shoot them in the prone position!!!) but I have used them successfully with a 3/4 or full choke out to 60-70 yards for a slow aimed shot on Charlies that were standing still and had not seen me. I don't think you could go beyond that range or hit a running fox - but these cartridges are the db's. If you only have a shotgun these are the best you will get and cost about £5.00 per box of 25. Otherwise get yourself a .17 HMR. They used to do this round in 53grammes - but you don't see them anymore, just 50g. Does anyone know why? Did somebodies gun blow up or something? M ROBSON
2oz of homeloaded HeviShot 2's through a .675" (Xfull) Terror choke will drop foxes out to 50 yards every time. Mark.
