pin
I have about a grand to buy myself some shooting transport. Having looked about and seen what others have managed to get for about this money I think it has to be an old landy. But I know nothing about them, really, so is there any particular type I should avoid (engine/year/anything). I know how engines work and am reasonably mechanically minded. Any recommendations from the landy experts out there?

pin
Ah, cool! Also, I said secondhand, its likely to have been to the moon and back at this price, so any-hand I think I meant

lurcherboy
Sorry mate but for that price you will be taking evening classes vehicle maintenance at the local college. Buy a jap piece instead. LB
markbivvy
I have about a grand you will get one for that price, but you will need a lot more to keep it running, never mind on the road.

I have taken engines out before, fitted cams, pulleys and re done timing and the like. Replaced gaskets and worked on brakes, replaced a clutch and am a qualified electrical engineer. Enthusiastic amature All that said I don't want to spend all my time under it. So if its not a landy then what should I be looking at then? reefman
Be patient and shop around you will get a serviceable series 3 for a grand. Do not worry about age, go on condition of chassis and bulkhead first. If it is rotten ,walk away there is anouther one down the road. Engines are a piece of pee to fix very under stressed overhead valve jobbee. About £15 for a head gasket set. I speak from experience I have owned 2 series 3's but am fortunate enough to have a defender now. My fist s3 was on a W plate it was a real corker and I shouldn't have sold it when I did. The second a Y plate needed the rear chassis welding (did it myself), brake cylinders renewing and cylinder head rebuilding. All done very cheaply (Paddock spare are excellent order online and get free delivery) An alternator for a s3 landy is £20 or so all in The same for older jap stuff if you can get it is £100's I am not a landy nut but trust them, they are a road going tractor, don't expect too much from the older models on road, however off road they are a hoot. El cheapo convertable for the summer too if you whip the roof off. http://threads.lro.com/cgi-bin/wwwthreads/...Board=adventure This site is amind of info. My advice is take someone with you when viewing Good luck. Reefman

RossM
You can't beat a landy!! I've had one since I was 17 except from a short spell where I bought a Ford Escort! Go for it. Buy the best you can for your money. Watch for rusty bulkheads and chassis other than those everything else is easily repairable. Once you've been bitten you'll never go back to a car. Your other option is to find a jap thing but they're not the same!! A nice hilux pickup would be excellent as a shooting vehicle. I have a 2001 Discovery and a 2001 Hilux. I wouldn't be without either!!

Mungler
I saw a good T-shirt once: "I would rather push my Landover than buy a Japanese 4x4". Poignant me thinks. Get a Jap 4x4 plenty around for less than £1k and they will still work and be reliable.
webber
I guess that its already all been said, but If you want a hobby that involves spanners and expense, then buy a Land Rover. They are great fun, but not reliable. If you want reliability buy Japanese. My son has an excellent Vitara, with all sorts of goodies fitted and LPG converted for sale if you are interested. webber

Highlander
DO NOT DO IT...if you want to know how useless landies are talk with pavman he's still be sinking if I'd left him there and sometimes I wish I had! On a more serious note...if you've only £1000 to spend why not buy a quad. Even if you've a long way to travel to shoot you can always hitch up a trailer to your normal car.
