AVB
I need some advice from any of the medics on here. I stupidly stabbed my finger with a knife while trying to take my fish tank filter apart (so the blade was covered in tropical fish tank water and dirty stuff). It's not a big cut but deep and near the knuckle. I stopped the bleeding and cleaned it as best I good. Thought it was Ok. Now a couple of hours later finger is swelling up and gone stiff. Very painful and pain is spreading down hand. I think my jabs are up to date. If I was in the UK I would pop to the walk in centre but I am in India and it's a trek to nearest decent hospital. I am being serious. Do I man it out or run to the hospital? Edited May 26, 2012 by AVB
Medic1281
Is it red and swollen, is the redness tracking along your arm? Being in the climate and surroundings that you are infections spread easily and quickly so I'd certainly advise getting antibiotics. Also try ice on it and keep it elevated to try to reduce the swelling. Make sure you've cleaned the wound as best you can and try to keep it clean and dry. Hope that helps, Regards Phil
-Mongrel-
My GF is an Assisant Practitioner in a Doctors surgery over here...and she is saying get it looked at. The issues being the dirty water/bacteria causing infection and particularly swiftly with the temperatures you are in. There is the possibility of nerve damage and she doesn't like the way the pain is spreading. Normally it hurts when you do it and then the pain subsides. MM
use a felt pen, and mark where the redness is tracking up your hand. then, an hour later do the same thing. this will give the medics something to go on when you get to the hospital. ack-ack
Sounds like Cellulitis. I had it at Christmas after sustaining a hand injury. Joint started getting stiff, then finger swelled and went red and the my whole hand came up. It looked mutoid. As MM says mark the redness with a pen. I was discharged with strong antibiotics and the obligatory pen mark on the arm and told to come back if the redness travelled. Get it checked as it can lead to septicemia. Lay off babe station for a few days also.
Vince Green
Never been to India but lived in Africa for some time. You don't mess with infections in these places, in fact you don't mess with any medical problems.
AVB
Thanks for the advice. just got back from hospital. That was quite scary. Couldn't believe how quickly that swelled up. Got tetanus jab and some antibiotics that are the size of more tablets. Hopefully pain and swelling will subside soon. Doc said I may have cut a nerve as well which explains why top half of finger is numb but said best to leave it as they tend to heal themselves. £6.25 to see emergency doctor, 4.5p for tetanus jab (yes 4.5p) and 80p for antibiotics. AVB
i suppose princess alexsandra wasnt good enough for you :yp: Absolutely not. I would take the worst hospital in India over that hell hole. I do not know anybody who has come out of that place better than they went in. Tug
Bit of bedtime reading for you... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Necrotizing_fasciitis When I was a cadet, of our officers pricked his finger whilst pruning roses. What initially started as a minor bit of redness spread over his hand and then up his arm. When he went to the quacks he got given the option to amputate at the elbow with a 50% chance of survival, or at the shoulder with an 80% chance of survival. He went for the 80% option and thankfully survived. True story...

Treatment is tablet based, do not under any circumstances operate......SO...7 operations later We have this Transferred to a hospital that knows what its doing and thinks "do we amputate (to stop the spread) or treat as it should have been treated (tablets) Thankfully we went down that route and still have my arm

shaun4860
It was, also had 3 tendons removed, but the worst pain was the site they took the skin graft from, never known pain like it this is it when finished, it has faded even more now, but wont have any feeling over the affected area, lost to many nerve endings, and have also ended up with secondary lymphodema (hand swelling) because of it Edited May 26, 2012 by shaun4860

shaun4860
That looks Mutch better now but what caused if in the first place I went into hospital for a back operation, It was site of the Canula (drip), couple of days after being discharged it started swelling and becoming very inflamed was monitored and given antibiotics but no better, taken back into hospital and the nightmare began, (kidney failure, heart problems, 4 days in HDU, all sorted now) spent 10 1/2 weeks in hospital not a good time Chuffing hell Shaun, that is epic. You poor old soldier. How long did it take to get that bad? It wouldnt have gone like that if they knew what they were doing, they shouldnt have operated, correct treatment is high doses of steroids, went from swollen to that in 2 1/2 weeks Edited May 26, 2012 by shaun4860
