What would you do?

I class myself as being an honest person, but would like other people's oppinion's as to what they would do.

Basically, approx two weeks ago, I bought an 'item' from a well known shooting sports supplier. The item was delivered by courier, and everything was fine. I acknowledged receipt of the item to the supplier, via email.

Yesterday,I received an email from the supplier, stating that my 'order' would be delivered that day, by the same courier firm. As I'm on night shifts,I left a note on my front door, asking for the item to be left with my neighbour.

I checked with my neighbour later that day, and sure enough, the same item had been delivered again. Now, what do I do? Do I contact the supplier, and tell them that they have made a mistake by sending me my order again? Or do I say nothing, and wait and see if they will contact me? My neighbour had to sign for the package,so I could'nt state that I had not received it. I know the answer, but it will be interesting to hear what other's would do in my situation.

Steve.

Personally I would ring him, a lot of small businesses are hand to mouth at present. If there is anything else on his stock that you want, offer to send the item back to him if he will credit you with the postage costs against the other item. He may give you a bit extra for your honesty, if not, a bit of goodwill in the future may well pay you back even more. :good:

Check you have not paid for it twice.

I checked my bank account, and have not been charged.

This company is not a small business, in fact, it's quite large. The trade price of the item to them, is not a great deal,as the item is worth less than £40.00 retail.

If it was me i would give them a shout and give them the option of paying the courier fee to get it back. Thereis one exception to this and that would be if it was _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _/ _ _ _ / _ _ _ _ _ _ and then I would not mention it and use it as part payment to myself for the goods that still haven't showed from before Christmas even though the money has gone from my account and many calls/emails PromIsing it's in the post

well you should not have to inconvenience your self in any way.if there daft enough to send you 2 its up to them to do the leg work and make contact.they will probably not bother for a small amount.why should you have to go a que in the post office if its there mistake.this does not make you a thief at all.if they contacted you and you said you had not got it that would.chill out and don't worry. :good:

Drop them a message and tell them the delivery has been duplicated, If they ask for it back tell them to send a courier to collect from your gaff! If they ask why, tell them for the same reason you had it delivered! You don't have time to go to the postie. Make an Honest gesture in letting them know it's been duplicated

ring them tell them you got it and if they want to arrange to have it collected you will hand it over to their courier. make them make the arrangements its their mistake not yours

I think thats quite fair, why should you pay out any extra for thier mistake. Next do it all the time for my Mrs

I have just phoned the company and explained what they have done. The person on the other end was quite surprised that I had received a duplicate order, and, as he stated, would not have noticed the error. He thanked me for my honesty, and is sending a pre-paid postage label to me. I don't mind taking the item to the post office, as it's better than waiting in for a courier to arrive.

Reckon you did the right thing here Steve. I'd hate the feeling of knowing that at some possible point down the line, the error is found and then explaining your reason for not doing the right thing in the first place.

Good on you Steve.

Was just about to post a reply suggesting you do exactly what you've done.

Good to see there's still plenty of honesty out there, especially as not a single soul on here advised you to keep it :-)

When the item arrived, I said straight away that I intended to return it. I just wanted to see what other PW members would do in the same situation, and it was nice to see that everyone said they would return it. :good:

I will add though, that if I had been the supplier, and someone had shown some honesty, then I would have at least given them a gift voucher for their next purchase.

I had a similar situation some years back.I was delivered 2 TVs by mistake. I phoned the company and explained their mistake, they said they'd arrange to collect one. 6 months later, after hearing nothing from the company, I unpacked the 2nd one and have it to this day. :) Well, I tried at least.

Steve... whether you like it or not.. if you keep the item without paying it is theft irrespective of whether the item was sent to you as a mistake.. that is the conclusion a court would reach, don't know what the actual act would be termed... theft by inaction?

Anyhoo.. if you don't send it back and have admitted on here that you have received it without payment and are considering just keeping shtum... I would say you have backed yourself into a corner anyway!

Just read the rest of the posts... you did the right thing! :good:

I had a double delivery from Amazon once because we discovered after about three weeks that they delivered the first package to a house about seven doors up with an infirm old lady in it who couldn't easily shuffle down to ours to give me the package.

I did end up with both deliveries and after a few unsuccessful attempts to get Amazon to have them back I ended up giving the duplicates away. It was books so not like a TV...
