drut
Have known a fox to take a cat(seen with cat in mouth as I watched it leaving farmyard)but I wouldn't think it common, given the damage a cat might inflict.Could be an individual fox has learned the technique to deal with cats, some terriers have the same gift(or curse depending on your outlook!).Others will have seen more than me & give you a more definitive answer. vulpicide
Common in Glasgow I know of two seperate cases of adult foxes disabling cats and allowing the cubs to kill it, not a quick death if the cat looked as if it was getting away the adult would drag it back. The other one the dog fox came over an 8ft wall with a live cat in its mouth and let it go for the cubs. There has been two yorkshire terriers killed by foxes in my area one chased into the kitchen in Newton Mearns and killed in front of its terrified owner sitting in her wheelchair. Gimlet
Foxes killing cats? Good old Reynard. Doing something useful at last. Perhaps I'll go easier on him. :yp: Edited August 8, 2012 by Gimlet
Bazooka Joe
Watched a Fox in the NV hunting the farmers cat one night. It climbed a tree to get away from the Fox, or it would be in the big kennel in the sky now..... So yes, some will.

Chr15j
Fox took my cat, somehow it got away, was touch and go for a week as to whether it would survive, massive scarring on neck, but the moggie survived! Mind you if you've seen the claws on my cat in not suprised. Yes a fox will take a cat!
Gimlet
So are foxes eating cats, or just using them as playthings to train cubs? I thought it was generally the case that carnivores don't eat other carnivores, except when scavanged as carrion.
Brisa
general thought is they are used to train cubs
Dekers
The Fox will take a cat. They are not generally their first choice and will commonly completely ignore them, but in some situations they will take them.
henry d
Never seen them killed by foxes, however one night I was calling in a cat and it turned and did a runner up some trees, then I picked up a bigger pair of eyes to the left and it was a fox, later found it to be a big vixen, and shot her. Couldn`t find the cat though :(
al4x
should have waited a few minutes Henry let the fox catch the cat and then shot it I'm starting to see foxes in a more useful light
henry d
I wish, the cat must have winded the fox or heard it and legged it up the tree, by the time I had shot the vixen the cat was nowhere to be seen.
al4x
still be glad if it was up the tree you'd have had to start a 12 page mass debate on the ethics of whether it was a safe shot or not
henry d
That`s what shotguns are for......and if you need to shoot a moving fox.
