hatsan arms escort - new or used

hi guys,

i was thinking of buying a hatsan escort just as a rough gun for pigeon shooting and taking on the marsh

im not sure if i should buy new or used. they seem to retail for around £366 new and around £200 used. I know new comes with a 3 year warrantee and the new ones are the new version, used are generally the old version

can some tell me what the differanc is between the new and old version and is it worth paying the extra £166 for a new escort with 3 years warrantee in the new version or should i just go for the used option

thanx in adavnce

escort owners are split into two groups - one that delight in the fact that their cheap gun will do anything a better gun will do( and probably keep it for years) and the others get rid as soon as possible because the heap of %^&* keeps jamming/going wrong etc.

( personally i think that it just comes down to luck if you get a good one or a bad one )

consequently I weuld therefore be wary of a second hand escort as its liable to be one of the *%^& ones- I certainly wouldn't want to buy one secondhand without cycling at least 100 shells through it .

Hi Mate, HATSAN OWNER Here:

Bought mine second hand, 3.5" 30" Barrels.

it`s not what the gun is like, but, Does NOT like Dirty burning cartridges, proved it this week-end, never had any trouble till change of cartridge, all hell broke loose:::

Its not wether you get a good or Bad one, change the cartridges, Runs like a Rolls Royce again..

Take it apart after shooting you will find the trouble every time, Piston gets a load of Crude on it, and Piston chamber cruded up... KEEP it CLEAN: decent burning cartridges. I Love Mine to Bits..

Buy one, you will NOT regret it mate::::

Now then fella,

I have the hatsan marine and a beretta 391 teknys, and to be fair i have had trouble with both. the hatsan keep it clean and check the o-ring is in good condition and fitted in the correct position, and you should be fine.

Kent velocity work and so do Fiocchi 24g Top1s.

What you require is the cartridge for the JOB in hand mate, Firing mine with steel shot, obviously for Wildfowling, I have gone through quite a few, The dirtest I have found were :: R C "CHAMPION TRAP" 28grms.. Yukkkkkk...

It left a tar like substance in the chamber and the PISTON was well gunged up..

But having said that I do have some R C "STEEL SHOT" 4`s 32 grm that a really great:::

Horses for courses really: give some a trial, don`t buy them by the thousand until you know which are the CLEAN burning one`s:::

PS:: The Above dirty burners were my mates,, BUT,,, he has had them for 3 years>>>>>> 3000 of them , GULP,,, ok through sxs etc but not Semi`s, his Gun a BERRETA AUTO also jammed up with the same cartridges, There You Go,, (Cartridges)!!!!..

Trouble is you need to FIRE about 200 rounds to get to know them really, ask your mates, they will probably have had **** carts at some time, 2 or 3 boxes should give you the experiment you need, when you strip it to clean the gun after EVERY outing. GOOD LUCK mate, just persevere, you will find the right carts for what you want it to fire.

Have Found KENT VELOCITY 28grm 7.5`s 70mm CARTS 1 ounce are good one`s for CLAYS.. But you will find on here Some people DO NOT like them,, I find them Clean enough:::IMO.

Some people find they RECOIL, but with the AUTO you won`t feel it anyway.. Good Luck, and keep trying::

Also a Hatsan owner having bought a 2nd hand black synthetic one a few weeks ago. It is one of the newer models so still under warranty. Only had 50 shells through it. As I was dropped on my head at birth it is also left handed.

As has been already said - keep it clean and use 70mm shells. I have used 67mm with no issue but had my first jam last week. Had no problems at all using 70mm

Pigeons - Gamebore Clear Pigeon - 32 grams 6's fibre wad (70mm case). Hard hitting and work well at range. Not used enough yet to know how `dirty` they make the gun. Only downside is the cases are black so hard to find spent cases.

Clays - currently using cheapest option - Dan Arms 28g 7.5's plastic wad. 70mm cases. No issues so far.

It's a great gun for all occasions and you can bounce it a few times and not really be that bothered. My synthetic black one has matt black paint job on barrels and action so no shiney surfaces.

If you want a well priced workhorse that works well if you look after it and use 70mm shells then it's worth considering.

I also love mine. For the extra I would buy new. You will get the latest one with improved gas works, and better loading system. If someone is selling one a few months old you gotta ask why!!!! Iv only ever put 70mm through mine and it's never jammed. Most of its shooting with 24g steel. No issue with cycling. For the price you can't go wrong, and those that wine about them have prob never had one, or used the older versions which did have some issues.

Get a new one mate , you get the 3 year warranty, I picked one up the other week, it's the new style mossy oak I paid 360 quid, and stick to the 70mm shells and keep it clean, at the end of the day it goes bang and does it's job, I do have more expensive guns, but I take this out 90% of the time now, and I aint bothered bout it gettting knocked about,

Too many Hatsan Haters on these forums. For the price of them i dont think you can knock them. Had mine for about 4 years now (got it for £299 new) and it has jammed once and that was due to me not holding it right. mine has taken thousands of rounds ranging from 21g 65mm cartridges to 38g cartridges. i've skipped cleaning it for atleast a thousand rounds and it still didn't jam. the newer models have to bolt release on the feed ramp. the older models like mine have a bolt release on the side, you also have to hold the bolt release down to load in to the mag tube.

and yes the gun really does take 65 mm cartidges, i found express 65mm shells can only be 1 + 1 f you try 2+1 the mag chucks both shells out at the same time. every other brand of 65mm shells works fine, not sure why it is but there we are. i'm sure as hell going to hold on to my hatsan.
