Bleeh
Mrs C just walked in as I was viewing this thread, and asked what the pipe on the top of the car was. I explained that the author was building a modern version of a punt gun, and how an old school shooter would row a boat out towards a flock of birds and shoot a large gun in order to bag a few. Mrs C assumed that the car would be driven to the foreshore and pointed at the ducks, before firing the gun. I have corrected her, once I stopped laughing. You should tell her that using a tank is often frowned upon by the Wildfowling community. Edited May 6, 2013 by Bleeh
DSPUK
Every time I came on to Gun's and Equipment I always bypassed this thread as I am not a game shooter or fowler - But yesterday last thing I looked at your last page and thought Wow ! So I have just spent an hour reading every page and have to say I am well impressed - Cracking job. The only thing I have in common with you is I also lined my homemade garage with roofing felt like your's then put T&G on outside. Will certainly keep my eye on this thread from now on. matt fieldcrafter-uk
I'm new so just read the lot in one session too . Very very impressed . I have skills but very different ones to you !!!! One post that summed it up for me was " what have I been doing with my time ?" Pretty much says it all for me ! Ok the gun smithing is more up my street as I can do a lite bit but I'm self taught so don't understand the terminology . I have a long standing dream to make my own Damascus gun one day OR fit my own Damascus to a gun . I'm a blade smith and forge my own Damascus ! Iv never found anyone that will bore or turn the barrels ! One day when I have a bar big enough and the punt gun is completed I wonder if you might consider it ? Keep posting I'm loving this thread !!!
Wildfowler
Now that does sound like an interesting proposition! And one I'd be very interested in!!! Especially as my next project will be a big bore fowling piece!!! To be continued on PM!
Wildfowler
Machining of the gun has started! I've started with the action...
Wildfowler
I put a centre hole in the end, used a live centre as support and then skimmed the OD, I then used the fixed steady to give it a little extra support to enable me to machine the bore for the recess in the face of the action. Wildfowler
I then drilled a 7.5mm hole up the middle followed by an 8mm ream to give a nice 8.05mm hole, then counter drilled it 8.5mm by 10mm deep ready to tap out m10.
lister1
Well done matey. Hope the machining goes well. I was a pecision machinist in my prebious job. All my machining was at the otherend ofbthe spectrum, some of my work was +-4 microns. Once I have my workshop extended I will be getting some tooling. I now sit at a computer modeling or as my friends say colouring in. It does feel good ti build something. A big welll done from me.
Wildfowler
Then i turned it around and held it in reverse jaws, clocked it to within 1/10 of a thou and started the process over again to rough out the 'handle'. I'll finish the turning on this tomorrow... This is how i left it
Wildfowler
I kept increasing the feed to try and get the swarf to chip, i ended up at 0.35mm per rev but it wouldn't... it just kept coming off in spirals...

Same as me! i used to work on some real precision peices but there's no real money in it unless you own the business, and even then its not great! Unfortunately i don't even get to do the 'coloring in' anymore... But having the machines at home certainly helps me find some satisfaction! lister1
I know what ya mean about not much money in it. One of the reasons I moved on. Got fed up of bustin my nut for nothing. I must say that even though I enjoy the design side, I miss maching. Your punt is certainly a beautifull thing, fine craftsmanship for sure. The carbide tipped tools work best at heavy feeds, but if you want the ultimate finish you won't beat a HSS tool finished with a fine diamond lap. Wildfowler
Yes, the tip tools are great for rapid material removal, and had the swarf been an issue I'd of increased the depth of cut but I don't want to risk knocking it out of true so I'll carry on and take it steady. HSS is ok but by the time you get to the end of your cut it has lost it's edge... (Its EN24) Which wouldn't be a huge issue for this component but for high accuracy work it's a pain. I'm using coated tips which are giving a very nice finish on the OD I'll try and get some decent pics... Edited to say EN24, they didn't have EN19... So I went up a grade rather than down... Wildfowler
I finished off turning the action block this evening. I was going to carry on and set it up on the mill to take the sides off it but thought i'd better spend some time with the Mrs...
Big Mat
I'd love to be able to make something like that! My boss was on about sending one of us on a machining course ( we make specialist electrical components but need various custom mandrels and other bits to make then ), might have to ask him about it again! Wildfowler
I started on the milling tonight. I clamped the action block in the vice by the handle and clamped down inside the action face using some bits and pieces i had laying about (i'm still waiting for the clamping set to arrive!) Wildfowler
This is with the bulk of material gone. I have left 5mm square in the corner so i can machine it out with a radius cutter tomorrow. I need to grind one up on the new bench grinder but i haven't got round to mounting it on the bench yet...
