Damned if you do damned if you don't !!

It's a tuff one and I think answers will be split.

If he's a good lad and you think he's learned from his mistake then I'd help him.

If he won't accept you we're right and that he should have taken good advice then I'd probably help him just enough so he dont get himself into trouble or suffer, but I'd let him pay back enough where he'd need to sacrifice something he likes doing like pub money so he learns the hard way.

Let him Come up with a solution or get him a push bike, he will soon learn how lucky he has been to have had your help and will soon realise that it's not such a good idea to tail gate.

I learnt the hard way, but not having it all handed back made me stop and think! Set backs only make you stonger and more determined so will stand him in good stead for the future.

If he makes an effort to get himself out of this situation maybe give him a hand to show your support.

1st son paid his own lessons after selling his mountain bike and passed after 20hrs just as his money ran out , he started work and took over the payments on our little seat which became his , 2nd son I taught to drive and mrs took out loan for his car and he repaid her each month from his wages .

Both had their own insurances from scratch .

Your decision

Don't make my mistake. I paid for stepsons car and repairs. Not a chance of any money back. The more you do for them the more they expect. I know its hard but write it off and let him stand on his own two feet.

Well being a bit of a spoilt kid myself I think you should help him, but not too much. It's so hard to judge the lad not knowing him so the best I can say is make him struggle hard but don't push it so far that he gives up. My feeling towards him is that you've advised him and he's known better so he does need slamming into place, but at the same time letting him destroy his chances over it would be daft if he needs the car to get to a remote job or something?

All the people who say you've got to stand on your own two feet, how much was car insurance when you started? It's rediculous these days - even if the kid gets a taxed and tested banger to run for nine months before it all runs out he'll still have to splash out more than a lot of us pay for a nice car for one year's insurance. For some kids in higher education or low paid apprentiships it just isn't possible even if they didn't ever buy anything alse!

My dad paid for my lessons and gave me my first car. At the time insurance was £800 which I paid myself and I earned £40 per week. I worked very hard for it but the simple fact is that on that sort of wage I couldn't have done it on my own. I still cycled to work and kept the car for evenings for the first year because I couldn't afford the fuel to drive to work!
