mikesy
Hi, I've been pricing cartridges over the net and I've seen a few 28gm 's 7.5 at reasonably good prices. Are these only good for decoying pigeons close in or would I be able to shoot at 30-40 yards on a full choke? Thanks in advance.
hedd-wyn
This is an ongoing debate Mike, some swear by them and others strongly disagree I think it's personal confidence and preference.
mikesy
I think your right about the confidence thing , just that someone I know will not use them as he swears they have little stopping power, but maybe its the lack of confidence in them. Anyhow since asking, I have just found a similar topic which sort of answers my question.

Do a search and you will see many for and against this size and weight. I use them with half choke and have dropped birds out to 50 yards. That in mind 95% of the birds you will shoot whilst decoying will be less than 40 yards and most probably 25 - 30. In short yes, very capable load. Look at Fiochi Top One, I get them for £37.50/250 Cos
scarecrow243
just think some use 16 bore or 20 bore etc with a lot less shot and still shoot well

mossy835
thats all i use for pigeons, and they work very well have killed birds out as far as 40 yards
Jesse James
Like wise as Mossy835. Eley 28g 7 1/2 fibre wad at £40.00 - 250 works for me every time. And also had some great distance shooting too with them. was using Eley high flyers 32g 6 but now at £70 a slab... no way and having same great results with 28g 7 1/2 at a major cost saving. semi auto plastic fantastic Hatsan with 1/4 choke. as said some do, some don't. lee
Dekers
7.5 are not generally recognised as a pigeon cart, but in the right hands they are perfectly capable. I'm not that clever with the shotgun and leave them and 8's and 9's for the clays. I get a bit heavier and bigger for anything live!

To answer your question, yes at that range and with that choke you'll kill them stone dead. Also bear in mind a lot of shot comes from Europe, and their 7.5 shot is an English size 7 (2.4mm). A perfectly good size for pigeon shooting.

anser2
I have used 7.5s and they do work out to 35 yards ok , but too many birds were wounded beyond that range. Any shots closer than 25 yards and the birds were hit with too many pellets making them unsuitable to eat. I droped from a 28 gr to a 24 gr load and that at least reduced spoiling close birds. I did find that i could kill a few 45 yard birds , but too many were hit and failed to come down. 28gr of number six is the best decoying pigeon shell in my experiance , stepping up to 32 gr load for roost shooting. miroku50
I use Cheddite universal trap 7.5 for pigeons as they are an English 7. Only £158 per thou and seem to kill very well.
Thunderbird
I recently shot 105 pigeons stone dead using Gamebore Supergem 7.5 28gm plaswad cartridges. They all fell dead apart from a tiny handful (which you always get) who needed finishing off. No runners at all. That was through CYL and SK chokes too. 30 out to (high birds) about 40 yards. GingerCat
I am a fan of no 6 or 7 shot however decoying last week I folded a pigeon clean in the air at a touch over 47 yards (paced out) and found a stray Kent velocity 7.5 28g clay cart hard done the business. This was through a quarter choke so I must say I am now a believer although won't be trying to repeat it and now check the carts before I go out. mikesy
Thanks, a lot of interesting replies. I'm definitely going to give them a go, I suppose I will have to chose my shots and keep them to 30 -35 yards.
Danoi99
I am only an average shot !! I plug the pigeons when they are about 25 yd away............28gm 7.5 seems to knock um flat, no problem !! Don't try shooting Crows with them though........they don't go down easy !! mikesy
I tried the 7.5 28gm fiocchi carts using 1/4 and 3/4 choke and found the 1/4 choke was not as effective as the 3/4 choke . A few were hit but carried on using the 1/4 but using 3/4 choke resulted in more clean kills. Most shots were from similar distances around 30yards give or take a couple of yards either way. These carts look to be more effective using say 3/4 and full chokes.
