remmy1100
if they have never been lamped before you will get away with lamp without a filter for a while then when they get wise switch to a red filter.if your going solo i would opt for scope mounted lamp some like my lightforce 170 you can use also with a handle .also depends what your shooting with shotgun ,air rifle ,firearm if shotgun your not going to need much so a led torch would likely do ,ive a led lenser that does 100yds scope mountable.if firearm get a lightforce 170 you may use for foxing ect in future and used with dimmer fits all needs atb

al4x
The only issue with the lightforce is having to drag a battery about, if you are walking there are some very good led torches now
Dekers
There are plenty of Lamps out there and some of the torches are really first class these days. Be careful with the power and get something with a dimmer if you can, that will be far more useful than a filter. You do not say what gun, is this for an air rifle? You do not need something powerful enough to illuminate a football pitch if it is, the 170 is a monster, fine, it brings in some future proofing if you buy a rimfire or centrefire and with a dimmer it will be ok, but I suspect this will be more than you want. I'm not well up on the array of torches available today, some are very expensive but there is a lot of choice and I have been impressed with a couple I have seen in action! kent
No need to burn thier eyes out, i think brand is unimportant but i use a cluson its smaller diameter is better for rifle mounting yet works fine shooting off the back of my wrist with the handle added with the shotgun. Its fitted with the lesser bulb, get great battery life and i have fitted a remote switch. Let you into a secret, filters only dim the light, just because an animal cannot descern the red spectrum does not mean it cannot detect red light- it just sees it as non red light! a dimmer will achieve the same or better results As someone who started before all the gunlamps and special battery packs were available (we used motor cycle batterys in army and navy canvass rucksacs, car spotlights with partially blacked out lenses or cowls) i can 100% say the new though pricey li-ion power packs are priceless. A friend uses an LED flashlight, for me they are too intence and too tight a beam. thats maybee because i am used to and have adampted my methods over the years. I tend to have a fast sweep without stopping on entering a field (for rabbits) then get into range and try and engineer things with a dark, silent yet quick approach for the shots to be taken. With foxes its a little different though as they spook to the light quicker and can often be called but thats another thread
Whitebridges
Might be worth having a look at a couple of previous threads. http://forums.pigeonwatch.co.uk/forums/index.php?/topic/220361-led-lenser-m7-for-lamping/ http://forums.pigeonwatch.co.uk/forums/index.php?/topic/222954-led-light-for-lamping/
bumpy22
lightforce has the best beam but be prepared to rewire it. if you want a lamp that will last I would go for the cluson range,I have both
coyotemaster
Horses for courses??? After using an LED mounted on a cap for scanning and a brighter LED on the gun for the shot I am spoiled. The scan light has 2 modes, a brighter and a dimmer one, the dimmer will show eyes at 150 yds, plenty far for an air rifle. There are several available with batteries and chargers from AMAZON and they are quite reasonable. Lugging heavy batteries is not for me. What Kent said regarding filters, better to use a red LED than try to filter it, they say green works well but have not tried it. PM me if you need brands etc.
steve_b_wales
The Cluson Blazerlite or Lazerlite are excellent lamps. Lightweight and good quality. Easily transferred between handheld and scope mounted.
Imperfection
I use the Deben Tristar. Its light enough so you dont notice it and is very bright. The blurb recons it will last 4 hours continous on high power and i dont doubt it either because i've never flattened it. Excellent piece of kit! http://www.deben.com...r-gunlight.html Edited November 19, 2012 by Imperfection
