Was doing a protected species survey on a site on Friday which is a couple of small fields in the middle of a residential area.

Owner came to meet me to let me in the gate and we had a quick walk up and down the first field discussing his plans for the site.

I noticed a couple of ramshackle wooden sheds that had no possibility for bats but could have nesting birds, so after telling the owner I would crack on, he left and I went to check them out.

Entered the first one which had two rooms and saw nothing until I entered the second room.

To my utter disgust, I found the corpse of a whippet that had been hung with baling twine, and on a board next to it someone had written 'The world is a better place without me'.

It had obviously been there a long time as it was just bones and mummified skin, but I could not believe that someone could do such a horrible thing to a dog.

Called the owner back and showed him and he was gutted and said if they had approached him he would have had it, but instead they crept onto someone elses land and killed it.

I can only hope that something similarly unpleasant happened to whoever did it.

When I was a kid I remember when the Gypsy fair ended one year council workers doing the usual clean up found a dead dog with a rope embedded in its neck, either hung or strangled.

Also know a local lad who 'does a bit of terrier work',he boasted to me when full of drink that he had hung one of his own dogs for chasing sheep. He got done, eventually.

why cant all dogs be chipped foc .and i mean all ,no chip no dog then all nutjubs who do this can be traced.it may sound big brother but there aint no bad dogs just bad owners who ruin good dogs, dogs dont start out nasty human **** turn dogs bad so if the hound pound has the legals to scan a dog and impound it till chipping so much the better methinks
