Hi all!

New to this forum and would like some advice. I tonight have been granted permision to shoot crows on some local land (65acres) which crows are attacking the freshly planted wheat with my shotgun. Was wondering how everyone else gets sucess when there out shooting crows. Ive heard an owl decoy are great investments and will bring 'every crow in the county' to have a pop at it, is this true? Open to ideas so anything would be much appriciated! Thanks guys!

I've never had much joy with an owl decoy. Some people use a stuffed fox, same idea but that will cost you a few quid.

My advice would be half a dozen decoys and make sure your very well hidden. You will need a face net and also gloves, if they see white there gone, cunning birds.

Also as you shoot a few birds get them out to, I prop their heads up with a kebab stick there about 500 for a quid.

As you get more in to it you could possibly start thinking about adding a little movement into your pattern with a flapper or a few bouncers, and possibly consider a caller. But practice before using it as if you get it wrong it will not go in your favour.

Best of luck, don't forget to let us all know how you get on.

Im wondering, how did these crows gain access to your shotgun?

When shooting corvids the main thing to get a decent bag, is concealment and good field craft :good: keep movement to an absolute minimum until the last minute, and let the birds commit fully :good: I normally use a few decoys set out in a random pattern, and replace with shot birds,i woudnt say anyone method of getting the birds to commit will always work  im afraid its trial and error, and you really will need to work at it,try the owl but don't rule out a rotary, flapper, lofting decoys and a normal decoy pattern, also try using a crow caller :good: But one thing I will say on shooting corvids especially crows/rooks don't underestimate them, they are very clever birds and learn very quickly  BB

"Crows are attacking freshly planted wheat with my shotgun" Wow thats some serious crows!!! Birds are most likely Rooks m8 and can be a pain to fool into coming within range.Normal scenario is to shoot one or two after which word get round on the bush telegraph and you dont see another one in range until the second you A/ Take a leak B/Put your gun down to improve your hide or C/ plant your backside onto the seat of your car.Buy some flocked decoys and make sure the sun is behind you when building your hide.Get the most comprehensive cammo gear that you can afford ~(including a face veil)-a crow can tell what colour eyes you have before you are even aware that its in the vicinity.Spend time watching where they are feeding or where the flight line is the day before you shoot-make your recce as late as possible because things change by the hour.A dead Rabbit with its insides hanging out can work-better if you have a decoy Magpie in a nearby bush as well.In my experience ,once you get about 10 the rest seem to get easier but the first 10 are rarely easy.I,ve seen some good results recently with a chap using a stuffed Fox standing over a dead bird-could be worth considering.Good luck and let us know how it goes. :good:

If you are refering to me,derbyduck, you need to wind your neck in-I've given good advice regarding the blackstuff and my final comment was an attempt at humour (wasted on some, obviously) If the OP takes offence at my post I will gladly apologise and remove it-if he needa a mouthpiece, however,I'm sure he will be in touch,,,, :innocent:
