A good .223 set up for foxs

Personally your best option is looking second hand at the right package, buying rifle mod mounts and maybe scope as well together you do tend to get bargains. I bought a remi 700 that had had some work done to it in .223 and that was a cracking rifle very accurate and very robust, its now gone to a mate so I might be looking for another in the not so distant future and really I don't know what I will buy. With time on my side I might look for another sako but the cost is very different. To give a guide my 700 was £600 with dm80 mod and rifle basix trigger and hogue stock once you start adding up what they cost the first owner the costs get silly. With .223 you can buy second hand with relative confidence they haven't been shot out, obviously you still ideally buy one from a decent source and have it checked but it is one of the safer calibers to buy 2nd hand

there is nothing wrong with an 8x56 S+Bender for foxing but a 3-9 x 40 gives the option of lower mag and its a lighter scope giving better balance on a smaller dedicated .223 action . You seriously don't need high mag levels to kill foxes and you don't need a bigger action full of blanking spacers for a diminutive .223 case- a common trend with accountant designed rifles these days

Depends on how many foxes you are shooting and if it is going to be a dedicated foxing gun or an all rounder. As you will find by the replies it will turn into a "how long is a piece of string" thread as everyone will have an opinion even those who shoot the odd fox now and again suddenly become a foxpert and will tell you to use what they use as anything else is not good enough.

You should be able to get a very capable gun, scope, bipod and mod for less than a grand.

If money is tight i would go New gun and second hand everything else.

At the end of the day get what you are happy with

Very good advice You should consider it. A used .223 will shoot on forever as they are not really hard on barrels at all and you may get a real deal with the optics and mounts--it all adds up.

I agree with the quoted comment - Personally id keep away from a used CF rifle unless i knew the history - it all depends on what you are wanting to do with it, if you are happy with 1" at 100 thats fine. If you want to stretch the legs you may struggle. With potential pitting from a poor/no cleaning regime, if you want accuracy - a clean with just a "Pull Thru" will not suffice. barrel may well be pretty much shot out etc etc
