I think this is the place to ask...How good is full choke when it comes to shooting clays?

I'm looking at getting a pump for fun and for the couple of hundred quid I'm prepared to pay for one they all seem to be full choke. Even though it's going to be a fun gun, I'd still like to be able to hit things when I pull the trigger.

I long ago stopped fiddling about swapping multi chokes between stands when clayshooting. I shoot full and half in my OU and full in my semi auto. The only time I change is if I am using steel.

You may find that full choke suits your shooting, but getting a smith to ream the choke back won't cost a lot. Whatever you decide make sure you pattern the gin with the different shells you're going to use to make sure you're happy with the patterns.

Well, I did it

Got a Revo Tactical and popped to Bisley this morning for a blast.

Now, I don't normally name my guns but think I will this one----- Donkey

Positives are the price and also the build quality for the price. Plus the fact it takes Bennilli / Beretta chokes.

Negatives, kicks like a mule ESP with 32g slugs and the slide is quite difficult to rack back to overcome the spring assist- not helped by the slippery fore-end.

Will remedy the slippery fore-end with some tape, but have to say am very pleased with it.

Now, can I join the Club???

I have shot my old hammer gun at English Sporting and it's choked Full & Full..............love it !!! 44 ex 50 is my personal best. Full choke is the way forward my dear boy. (close and fast crossers are a bit tricky though).

Not being funny but that's not reason enough for me. If it does a good job of what it's supposed to be doing and it's well built I don't care what name is slapped across it.

I like things with tradition I guess. I know actually that the Winchester isn't even made in the U.S, but still I'd buy it over the Turkish gun. Also in fairness, while the Hatsan semi autos have a bad reputation, I expect the pumps will be fine, it's a simpler thing. For that money though, if you search around you could buy a used Wingmaster, which is TWICE the gun of both of those other two. The Americans reckon the late eighties and earlier are the best ones, I have a 1979 and I can confirm it is a beautiful thing in my eyes, never jams unless I fail to do my part, and is made to last.

Trust me, I've looked for a multi-choke Mossberg or Remington for the price of a new Hatsan or SXP but can't find any, especially any that are being sold local to me.

Pasty you are right, it is made in turkey.

Fabhui Go SXP, very good gun, looks better and feels better to me too. Meant to be the fastest pump as well....? You may want to mount both though, LOP on the sxp is a tad on the shorter side. Personally it hasn't affected my shooting at all but everyone is different.

Ok fellas...Out of the Winchester SXP or the Hatsan Escort which would you choose and why?

Fabhul

I have seen both used successfully for PSG matches although they are not the fastest gun to load, both are basic guns made for the budget market, Im sure they would be fine for a knock about pigeon gun & even for a round of clays, if your brand conscious then I guess the Winchester name has the pedigree even if these are made in Turkey.

If your budget will stretch to it then as mentioned a good used 870 or Benelli is a better option.

I paid £375.00 for this beauty, some 5 years ago maybe. They are out there, but you do have to wait sometimes. incidentally, that's my dog in the photo, and his name is Mossberg lol

Here's my new gun, its a Hatsan Field Hunter in Camo.. only had the chance to use it once last week as the skies were empty :( but of the whole 2 carts i managed to get off, it was great, haha! will be getting out tomorrow and might get a half decent chance of squeezing a few off. despite the fact its a Hatsan, for £289 with 3 years guarantee, it was a steal.

Thanks, harley

Well I'm now in pump club.

Picked up a Winchester SXP this morning for a Christmas present from the Mrs. I won't be shooting it until after Christmas day but initial impressions are that it looks (to my eyes at least) really really nice ,especially in the flesh and feels solid and sturdy. I was a little worried about the LOP on it as I'm 6ft with an average reach and I'd read about it being pretty short due to the stock but when mounted it feels extremely comfortable!

I've yet to see how it fires but so far just with how it looks and feels I'm very impressed. Tomorrow I'm going to be just like a kid on Christmas morning! :)

Fabhui, nice one! I hope you enjoy many happy hours of shooting with it!

I was out with my Benelli SuperNova yesterday. Pigeons flighting into and out of oak trees looking for acorn fall.

Sport sporadic and the speed of these birds on the wing was incredible.

Got one pigeon and a magpie on the wing. Chuffed about the maggie!

Merry Christmas to my fellow pumpers ;) !
