ayano3
Many years ago we would go to the marsh after the season and comb the high water mark and do pretty much a litter picking exercise, does your club still do this and would you be prepared to do this to pick up all the things washed up by the tides etc.

Reabrook
We don't but I think it would be good if we did. Trouble being now there is so much rubbish built up along some areas of the Severn it would be an almost impossible task for an Army. The last time I was at our principle marsh I was thinking there were club funds to be supplemented by selling logs, just for a few days work with a chainsaw. -Mongrel-
We do two or three litter pics a year, last one was a couple of weeks ago and there will be another after the season ends.
ayano3
We have 3 clubs use the marsh. I run the holbeach website and have members on the forum from all clubs, I was thinking about joining forces and seeing what response I would get. My first move was to see what the general consensus was. I know its always left to the few but it may sink in and encourage more members to be proactive in what is their club. silver pigeon 3
I know its always left to the few but it may sink in and encourage more members to be proactive in what is their club. That is the problem, it is the same few who always turn up to help out be it at events like litter picking or helping out with associates etc. It is the same when there are any fund raising evenings too. Big Mat
As you know Graham, i'm happy to help with anything down the marsh! It would be nice, if you organize a clean up, to see a few more people down there than when we filled in the pot holes!

Chad63
We do one every year in conjunction with the local council, Estuary Partnership and WildlifeTrust. They like us because we'll venture to clear rubbish where others daren't...

Glad it's not just our club. I think it's the same in most clubs though, usually the committee and a couple of members
Penelope
I have always thought that work party involvement should be a condition of membership. One angling club that I am a member of has this as a rule, that x 2 work parties are compuslory each year for the first 5 years of membership or no membership for the following. fuzzypigeon
The only issue with that is not everyone is able to attend such things which by making it compulsory you deny someone the opportunity to take part in our fantastic past-time simply because the have other commitments
Reabrook
Many years ago I lived in Germany and joined a local Angling Club. First years subs were DM 200 which at the time was bloody expensive. During the year there were four half day work parties on a Saturday morning and everyone you attended knocked DM 25 off next seasons subs giving you the option of cutting the price of next seasons fishing in half. All the work parties were pretty well attended and its always struck me this was the way to go with both fishing and Wildfowling clubs in this country. Of course there will always be those who'd rather pay the extra than commit to a work party but the club has then generated that extra income to use as it sees fit so wins hands down

Reabrook
Easy, have more days, that way everyone will be able to make some of them. I'm not convinced that is the answer to be truthful. More days could just mean more days for those that do and make no difference at all to those that never do. If people are told that joining includes compulsory work parties or financial penalties when applying for membership they can make a choice on wether to join or go somewhere else. Has to be a condition of membership. Works for one of my angling clubs, if you want to be a member you will attend.
scolopax
We used to do a foreshore clean up every year but EN as it was then stopped us burning the rubbish, the logistics of moving and disposing of tonnes of old drums, tyres, timber, etc etc etc made the job from then too difficult and expensive to undertake, so the top of the marsh is now covered with years worth of flotsam. But at least we are not releasing any carbon eh?
