DSPUK
I need some slab's laying - 10 slabs deep by 17 slabs long - 170 or there about's in total - These are 18x18" slabs so not that big or heavy - The ground work is done in so far as they are going on top of existing slab's which are dead flat and clean - the edges have been cleared and MOT laid and wakker plated down - dead easy job - just mix mortar and lay - even the slope to run water off is there - just have to keep even layer of mortar. Had two people in so far and both have come out at near enough £1100 - one said 5 days work - never asked the other how long - So is it me being behind times on prices or is this going rate today - Just feel I am being ripped off or they don't want a tuppeny halfpenny job and quoted stupid money. Vince Green
I don't think the price is that bad a couple of blokes say 3 days Two blokes 3 days = £1100 thats £183 each per day. I can get Poles to do that for £70 a day and they will do a brilliant job and I doubt it would take them three days. I can get Indians to do it for £40 a day but they would be illegals. Never the less they will do a good job. No wonder nobody wants to employ British workers any more. I was watching two so called builders working on an extension last week. Turned up about 9.30 did a couple of hours work. Sat in the van for two hours reading the paper then did a bit more. Started clearing up about 3.30 and were gone just after 4. If I were employing them I would have paid them off after the first day and told them not to come back. Polish blokes will graft all day from 8.30 to five and you give them a case of beer to take home on top of their wages they are delighted. Such a difference, always nice blokes too, none of the attitude and arrogance you get with British slobs sorry workers! Personally the cost seems a little steep as 5 days seems a little long. But it is what it is and two quotes coming out about the same tells ya something. figgy
If all the hard work is done, why moan over the price, if you can get Indians to do a good job at forty notes day. Just employ one to do the graft. Get the job done and chuck in a curry at the end as a bonus. Figgy
sitsinhedges
Did the quote include slabs and sand/cement?
digger
Five days maybe but they have to buy sand and dust, provide the tools, get to and from site etc. Take it some slabs need cutting so factor in the cost of a diamond blade and fuel for a quick cut. All these add up. As an aside above is so true about British workers a real pain in the rear. Had enough of subbies using a night on the beer as an excuse not to turn up or having to take the dog to the vets blah blah
Boydy47
Bit of different background (groundworks sub-contracting) but we pay our subbies around £6.50 a square metre for slabs. A decent slab layer should lay 60 to 80 slabs a day, we have a couple of guys that can do 100 a day, (all based on butt jointing the slabs mind)so if it's 2 blokes it should take 2 days tops. I know loads of brits who work their cobblers off and do a straight job for a fair price. I know of loads of foreigners who i wouldnt touch with a barge pole. The reason you pay £70 a day is cos their heart is still in poland. Those that live here full time and have all the u.k. bills and mortgage and dont live 10 to a room all charge the £183 a day. I cant believe you have fallen for the government anti-brit propaganda.

Vince Green
Are all British workers like this? ? ? No not all but too many are now. I can recommend some brilliant british workmen but I have seen many times more who are total planks who price up jobs at hundreds of pounds a day and think they are gods gift. When I tell them to sling their hooks because I can get the Poles to do it for a quarter of the price you get all the bad attitude but frankly I don't care. They are living in a time warp when builders could dictate their terms and get away with it but most of them are dinosaurs now and don't deserve any sympathy. I actually don't like them and they certainly don't like me. Its simple economics, the market forces. My job is to get the best job for my clients at the best prices and in a reasonable time scale. Vince Green
When I become prime minister people like you will be dropped from a great height into the sea just within swimming distance of Poland and not allowed back When you become Prime Minister I will happily go of my own free will! But have you ever been to Poland? I have twice and hope to go again this year. Shooting is free absolutely everywhere, just ask and you will always get permission but make sure to leave a couple of rabbits when you have finished. You can buy a nice farm with about 60 acres for around £70,000 and beer is about 35p a pint in rural areas

sitsinhedges
The simple fact is that most construction workers aren't wealthy, or even well off, by any stretch of the imagination. Most of my spare cash goes to constantly updating the several thousands of pounds worth of equipment I have to provide to do my job.
paul2012
Well if it were me quoting, i'd suggest 2-3 days working by myself for 170 18's laid up on motar, buttjointed would cost you around £600 if i were to supply the slabs or about £220 if it were labour only, Makes me laugh really the prices some people charge, I learn't this from working at a concrete products yard from 16 making slabs, posts, kickboards, gravestones, ornaments, birdbaths, blocks, ballustrading, boxes, flower pots, etc etc But we made em the old fashion way, by hand with a mixer and vibe table, The old boy down there made me work bloody hard, no noncense type of guy, He taught me everything and i still get my slabs from there to this day at very low prices, I don't charge huge amounts for labour just enough to keep me going and cover my costs in blades, fuel etc To be fair it keeps me going and i make plenty and i'm always in work, So why take on pols etc when you could support people like me who work bloody hard for what they get, Not the cowboy type who gets half dozen chaps in who are clueless but work for pennies so he can get the job done and make huge profits,
Vince Green
Can I ask what your job is? It started out as a cleaning company but we now do property maintenance and managment, decorating etc for a number of ex-pat landlords on rental properties in London, it a potentially huge business. If I wasn't looking to retire in a few years myself i would really go for it because there is so much work
digger
Which ties in to why the quote was what it was. Always ps me off when people dont allow for thousands spent on tools, ppe van and PL insurance. Not to mention training courses, getting a ticket for relevant plant etc etc. I have an advanced confined spaces ticket and that was bloody expensive so I add a % on any such job to get that outlay back.
