Leasing a Car

Hi Chaps,

Looking at spending around 5-7k on a second small car for the Mrs. Was going to finance it probably over 4 ish years (Although we never seem to keep any car more than 2 before we chop it in) so looking to pay around £150 per month.

Now i have looked in various garages at various deals which would get me a couple of year old 5 door small run around for the right money. However i happened across a few lease hire sites where i can pay around £150 per month with a few hundred quid deposit and drive away in a brand new car , keep it for two years then give it back and start again. This really appeals as it would be under warranty, buttons to tax, reliable and i wouldnt have to worry about getting rid of it when we wanted a change.

So, has anyone had any experience doing this ? Are there any pitfalls with doing this or anything i need to watch out for as far as hidden costs etc ? Some of the lease web sites seem really really good value ( Like 30% cheaper than i could source from a dealer) so is there a catch ?

Any advice would be really appreciated before i take the plunge

Cheers

we all lease or cars through the company i work for works out great we change them every 2-3 years get what ever we want top of the range for usually less than the base model if buying, yes you dont own it at the end of the day but you dont loose money as you would if buying, we tend to get the packages that include servicing. like above stick to the mileage their ******* for getting you on that an any noticable damage get sorted before it goes back.

Just to add, SWMBO currently has a car on lease through Chr15j above (and I think my sister does too).

Never had any issues, all hassle free so far. However, the true test will be when it comes up for renewal in a few months time.

Thumbs up for Chr15j...

I work in a body shop and we look after alot of lease cars for people and as said above check for body work damage before you take it back as alot of them just take the car back and the next thing you no if you get a bill through your door for all the work they have had to have done (most dont have the work done and just keep your money and send them to the action damaged)

Alot of the people we work for have been stung like this so next time they come to us first before they take them back. The better leasing companies will let you take them back a month early and ask them what they will charge you for and this give you time to get them fixed before the end of your contracet.

There favourite we have found is wheel/wheel trims scuffs and chip/crack's in windscreens. The worst company we have had problems with believe it or not are merc they are proper rob dogs

I've had 2 leased cars on a Personal Plan over the last 5 years, you need to be absolutely sure about the mileage you are likely to do, as you will get crucified if you exceed the agreed total mileage.

Quite a few Insurance Companies won't insure leased cars, (don't know why, they just won't), as I always thought it was the driver, not the car that mattered..??

If the Road Tax goes up, you will pay the difference, as you will also do if VAT gets raised, so don't assume the price you will get quoted will stay firm throughout the contract.

One plus point is that they normally offer to sell you the car at the end of the period for a reasonable price at a discount to it's open market value, I've just bought my Volvo XC90 from the leasing company at what I considered to be a very fair price.

Use a specialist broker to sort you out a deal, the prices that you will get quoted by using the Internet are generally a fair bit higher than the price you will get quoted by a broker direct, so talk face to face, and, as always, shop around.

I don't think you'll get much for £150 / month on a 24 month deal, obviously the longer the term, the cheaper the monthly payments..??

Cat.

The charge above your agreed mileage should be clearly stated and understood beforehand, usually around 6-10p per mile so 3k equals say £300 which is no real ball breaker.

On hand back you have to insist on the vehicle being inspected and signed for by an official, that's the time to argue the toss over minor imperfections, a certain allowance is made for fair wear and tear but don't expect someone else to foot the bill for your lack of care. Some insist that the vehicle is MOT'd before hand over which I think is a cheek.

You did well there then. Ive had company lease cars in the past and unfortunately for me, the prices they quoted me to allow me to buy the car once the lease was up were about 25% higher than I could get the same car from privately.

My wife's got a lease car via her company and it works out well for her. As its a company car she pays about £70 a month extra in tax, but her company pays everything else - tyres, servicing, insurance, tax etc all inclusive as part of the lease agreement. Her company`s agreement with the lease company is over 4 years or 100k miles whichever comes first. If your getting a personal lease deal then the tax side of things wont affect you.

I looked into lease cars & PCP for myself last year when I was looking for a new car and the killer for me, was the mileage i do. Anything more than 12k a year then it gets expensive. I worked out the depreciation cost of buying a new car outright compared to the yearly cost of leasing compared to PCP deals and for my situation it worked out cheaper just to fork out and buy the car outright. So, it all depends upon your personal situation really as to what works for you.

There are alot of anecdotal tales bouncing around, I do this for a living and know all the pitfalls etc and what is reasonable and not. If anyone wants any impartial info drop me a line. My reputation to date is exemplary as my customers get straight answers because im independent so not fussed what product my customers take thus they get the right one. Have even advised a customer against leasing altogether as not suitable for them, they bought outright through me instead.

I'm looking to buy, (or maybe lease), a Mazda CX5, 2.2 SEL manual diesel with dark blue pearlescent paint.

My mileage has dropped as I now work in Central London and take the train most days, it's now about 12k.

I love the Volvo, it's a really comfy ride, but I only get 30 mpg out of it, now matter how careful I am.. :/

I spoke to my local dealer today, he said there's none available in that spec, delivery would be at least 4 months..

Chris, PM me if you can do anything..??

Alex C, I notice your up in the glorious North East. Do you know any mates/family that work at Nissan??

If so, you can lease through them, friends and family scheme. A Nissan Note, £99p/m including insurance and servicing, new motor every 10 months. SWMBO s in the process of getting a Qashqai, all in its working out at just under £200p/m

Maybe worth a look?

they are a nice car my brother has just got one, mpg seems surprisingly good considering the way he drives and frankly goes like cow poop off the proverbial shovel but he did have to get the 2wd version due to company rules. There was a bit of a wait for it though which sounds like it is still going on
