four-wheel-drive
I think that it is probably down to rats I sometimes get the odd hole appear in my garden and they are perfectly round and about 2" dia I never see any rats I do have house mice living it the bank at the bottom of my garden they do not bother me so I do not bother them I do not think that it is them making the new holes. four-wheel-drive
Second species.... I love the way that you think that perhaps there is a use for cats after all and all of that food you have been giving it was not a waist of money. Good shot?
If the hole was dug from the surface where has the soil gone? It's a mole with a wheelbarrow.

feaks
My money's on voles, I've seen it many times before. It happens more often in dry grassland and lawns which have started to crack in the soil which make for easier runs under ground.

Is there a watercourse nearby?

feaks
When i said voles i meant bank or field vole deffo not water. Is there any sort of run leading to the hole or any nibbled grass around the hole?

kyska
They generally like a bit of cover though. Is there a watercourse nearby? No, not nearby, a brook maybe 500m away. When i said voles i meant bank or field vole deffo not water. Is there any sort of run leading to the hole or any nibbled grass around the hole? Not what I've noticed, but I'll look later. There are about 6 holes now, all within 2-3 feet of each other!

Dirty Harry
Shrew or vole. My pointer decided to dig one out in the orchard. I let him as I thought he was on a wild goose chase until I heard the squeak. I told him to drop it which he did but he fore I could ID it properly the JRT ate it whole. It was not a rat as it had no tail.

ben0850
Had loads of holes like that in my lawn last year, about the diameter of a deodorant can. Big influx of mice, loads of the little beggars in the dry stone walls and digging holes in the lawn. I was lucky that over the next week or two night time bird pellets started appearing all over the top of the walls. My garden became an Owl take away, not had a problem since. Could be Roland but depends on the diameter of the holes, if its mice they will nibble at any bedding plants you have etc. Edited June 29, 2013 by ben0850
