gazzthompson
Same-sex marriage in England and Wales is a step closer to becoming law after the House of Lords approved the change. Peers backed a government bill paving the way for gay couples to marry. It is set to become law by the end of the week, with the first weddings in 2014. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-23320624

aris
Aah, the smell of radical Liberalism If someone said to you - I don't like guns - gives you 5 reasons why and then says 'lets ban them'. Would you be happy? It's really no different.

ack-ack
Fagging?, does it still go on? It always used to make me laugh that one, very much a case of 'well it didn't mean that back in those days'
keg
I would add to this: if you don't like guns, don't use guns. Despite being right of Ghengis Khan, this is bang on. Personally, I do not think it should be made law. It should be down to individual vicars and priests. Taken to the nth degree, if this is put on the statute books, this then opens up a nest of worms. Certain churches will only marry you if you attend regularly, is this also discrimination. Should faith schools be forced to take children of other religions. Will the parents of these children then complain about their children being brainwashed?...
castletyne
I would add to this: if you don't like guns, don't use guns. Difference with passing gay marriage is they are going to force it on churches would be like forcing gun ownership on the antis Its not just a case of if you don't like it don't do it
aris
Indeed - I sympathise with the Church - they have 2000 years of dogma to uphold. I would be happy to exempt them from discrimination for not marrying same sex couples. But in the eyes of the state - we should all be equal. If you boil it down - marriage is nothing more than a social contract. I'm not particularly fussed which two people take out this contract as it is a benefit to society. huffhuff
I really don't see what the problem is. Each to their own. We are a varied and eclectic mix of people. Everybody is different - it's part of being in a multicultural, liberal and civilised society (surely Shirley). Just deal with it. If it doesn't affect you, then why bother moaning or preaching this, that, and the other. Open your mind and don't be so bigoted. It is what it is and we are where we are. henry d
Dead simple to sort out, have marriage, outside of church etc. so you can marry if you are not a christian etc. and have Holy Matrimony for those who do...simples.

Canis
while i'm fine with them having a "Marriage equivalent" giving them the same legal status as marriage so that they can inherit from each other and be jointly liable for debts etc calling it marriage is the bit that sticks with me. what next ?our childrens generation will be marrying the cat ( marrying the dog being deemed too sensible) sod 30 years back , I;'d even take 100 years back knowing there was 2 rucks with the krauts coming up in the next 20 years
