A tricky time on barley

I was due to meet up with Fenny today to have a look around his permissions for some birds , neither of us was confident about finding any numbers , but I loaded the van and headed off to his anyway.

On the way to his I noticed some pigeon crossing the road going in the direction of one of my permissions , I followed them and they were going into a field of barley which had some large laid patches .

I was not sure if this particular field belonged to my farmer as i had not shot there before but a quick call and he said yes it was his and have a go at them .

So plans were quickly changed and I picked Fenny up and brought him back to my permission.

Now this particular field was difficult to shoot as we had houses to the right of us well in range of our shot also a couple behind us as well as a road.

We started off with a magnet and about 20 decoys and birds came in straight away , the magnet was pulling them well but they often flared right leaving us no shot after a while of this and just a few in the bag we changed things bringing the magnet closer and putting a flapper out in the laid patch .

This changed things dramatically and birds were now decoying in such a way as we were getting more shots off.

We still had to be very choosy as we did not want to drop birds in the longer crop and be unable to pick them .

We packed up after about 3 hrs with 60 picked with just four lost ( we left the dogs at home as it was 30c and I dont put mine in barley anyway) which I though was a good effort for 93 shots between us.

Fenny with the bag.

Well done. Is was hot out in the fields today wasn't it?

Had Fenny fallen asleep?

It was roasting , the van dash said 26c a 9pm !

I think the sun sapped Fenny energy levels somewhat  , the bag would also have been much bigger if he would throw his hatsan in the bin and buy a gun that works :whistling:

Well done, Fenboy! It was certainly hot out. I was out on another barley stubble and only got 25. The pigeons really wanted to be on the rape. The farmer there says it should be cut in the next couple of days. Hopefully then the fun can really start.

Thanks Fenboy for a great afternoon have managed to exchange the hatsan for 24 variety walkers crisps pack, a good deal I feel thanks again Fenny

Had you gone to Tescos with the Hatsan you could have got the same 24 variety crisp pack plus a 'meal deal' of sandwiches, a drink and chocolate.
