but sport is the wrong word for game shooting & it wont be one until prizes & cups are involved

I disagree.

The use of the term sport in this context is a shortened form of field sport.

Definition from Wiki:

A country sport or field sport is a traditional blood sport, such as hunting with various types of hound (most commonly for fox, hare, mink and red deer), shooting (particularly of game birds, such as grouse, partridge, pheasant, andwoodcock and non-game birds, or fowl, such as duck, wild geese and snipe, when it is called fowling or wildfowling), and fishing (particularly fly fishing) (most commonly for brown trout and salmon). Also included is deer stalking and hare coursing.

I understand where you are coming from CharlieT but the sooner we get rid of the word sport for driven shooting it will be one lump of ammo less that the antis can keep throwing at us ! Killing in the name of sport ! , do you see where I am coming from ? .

I didn't think it was me being defensive. ;)

If you thought it was me being defensive, you were mistaken.I was merely answering your question regarding the 'purpose' of pheasant shooting.I don't agree with it as I don't regard game shooting or pest control as 'sport'.But that's just my opinion.

Maybe it all depends on a persons view point ?? :hmm: .

Well said .

ps the poor old bull has a choice ? he can kill the Matador & finish up in Bull heaven on the stud farm for the rest of his days or he can finish up being killed & in Bull heaven after hanging up in the butchers ! :hmm:

What point are you trying to make? He may have let you know he's a veggie (maybe be declining a bacon sarnie), but you've obviously let him know you shoot live quarry. Why is that different?

Not making a point just saying they should keep their mouth shut about being veggies & i'll keep my mouth shut about being a into shooting.I didn't tell him i shoot,he just confronted me one day when he saw the girls getting meat of me.I'm vegetarian & it upsets me seeing you bringing in rabbits he said.I said get a new job i simply don't care go preach some where else. I dont talk to him about shooting he found out i shoot because of the meat i bring in, i dont even talk to him full stop as he's also a bender another one of my hates.

I'm just curious. I don't shoot animals nor do I have any intention to. I'm purely into clay pigeon. I wouldn't even go fishing. However, I would never openly or actively go against those that shoot or fish nor do I think they are bad people or doing bad things (except for trophy hunting of large mammals (big game etc) like elephants, lions, bears etc).

Am I a lone voice on here or are there others who share my thoughts?

Rabbit shooting is competitive: its me against them. The prize is free food for me and cheaper food for Joe public because less of it has been eaten by rabbits.

I've shot my main ground heavily for the last 3 years, and so far its a draw.
