malkiserow
My mates wife often takes stuff (food mostly) out to him working in the fields...... he has the Disco and needs it. She uses a VW Caravelle and often gets stuck not because she has not got a 4x4 but because she grounds the sump or front crossmember on ruts. She tends to do this only in summer on lighter nights when she is trying to get the kids out of the house. So as they do not want another 4x4 what 2 wheel drive car can they use which has a higher than average ground clearance. It will need to be a good family car as well. What thoughts lads and lasses....? Edited August 29, 2013 by malkiserow

I had one years ago wonderfull things for going over bumpy tracks but there are two things that you should never do in one the first is go on a motorway in one I did once and was going along nicley doing 55 in the inside lane when a big artic flew past me and suddenly I was doing 80mph never again bricks comes to mind. The other thing is try to overtake anything unless you have about 2 miles of clear road ahead and it is doing 20mph even then its best to keep your fingers crossed I had problems trying to overtake a tractor one time.. In the end I took it in for its mot it looked good not rust untill he got it up on the ramps and he said that the hole chasis was rotted out so it went on to car heven. Mr-Sheen
Subaru forester wouldn't be a bad choice, they are nearly indestructible, very comfy, handle and drive more like a car than a 4x4 and have a very good mpg.

I presume you mean the diesel ones - we have a petrol and it does about 25mpg
al4x
and 4k won't get you a diesel one. Its a hard price bracket to get anything really suitable, high ground clearance usually comes with a 4x4 so I'm not sure there is anything particularly suitable out there and in budget, best option is to buy her a mountain bike

Fisherman Mike
Sorry misread you post...as you were... So they need a 2 x 2 family car with occasional off road capability.... The consider the 4 x 4 sedici...its got 2 wd 4 wd and 4 wd lock I drove one at Cirencester park a few years back ( The Suzuki SX4 version) and wow what a piece of kit. Do a you tube video search and you too will be suprised

malkiserow
The Rav 4 looks like a 4 seat car by the looks of the back seats as there is not even a lap belt. They have 3 kids below 11yrs old so need a 5 seater.
Fisherman Mike
Thanks Mike, that is a new one on me, never seen one of those but have the occasional sx4 Its exactly the same car made as a Joint Venture between Fiat and Suzuki...just stick a Fiat badge on it. watch this illustration of its capabilities when pitched against the much overrated Kuga....( Which is a fine car on the black top) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcnJBTH2J0s

Mr-Sheen
I presume you mean the diesel ones - we have a petrol and it does about 25mpg Thats not even that bad, my 1.6 fiesta only manages 30 MPG! But yes, the diesel ones are much better on economy.
