Worth it in the End

Decided to shoot some bean stubbles on our pheasant syndicate farm that had steadily build up over a week with John, a pal of mine, He went to a south facing field that was sheltered from the harsh North Easterly showers that had around 200 on when he arrived and he started to shoot straight away. I took a block of 4 fields the other side of the farm. I spent over an hour flagging off 3 of the fields and got soaked in the process. I set up on the central field that commanded 2 distinct flightlines, with 2 flappers, 2 bouncers and 6 dead birds. Shot first bird at 11.15 and the birds came steadily all day. They stopped during the showers but came out in force the second it stopped. Best period was between 2 and 3 when I could hardly load quick enough. Shooting was difficult in gale force wind and I had to concentrate on making sure I got one from the big groups as they were off in a split second on the wind. Packed up at 4.30 and picked a very satisfying 145. Over 2/3 of the bag was made up of young, uneducated birds, John picked up 40 and said he'd had some very testing shooting. . Great sport and worth all the effort to flag off the fields and get a soaking on a day when many might have stayed by the fire!
