Ferrets Paying the Rent

Nice video, but if any of my ferrets bit me whilst working them they would be just as dead as those rabbits. A ferret that bites is no good to no one. :good:

Ah no she's not bitey normally, but she had just come out of the hole and ferrets eyesight isn't great and I smelt of rabbits. She didn't clamp down it was just a nip, although it did bleed for quite some time! We have another jill though that we can't work really as she is VERY bitey and has a habit of killing all the rabbits rather than flushing them.

Mine don't bite as they are conditioned (as you cant really train them) from a young age with rabbit with the fur on then later in the season I will kill a bolted rabbit and chuck it down so they get used to the rabbit kicking...they instantly jump on the rabbit but loose interest when it stops kicking.

A ferret that bites the handler is like a gun dog that crunches quarry...not a lot of good, they might work well but it need to be a all round package.

I think a lot of it is breeding, we are planning on having some kits soon. I think there is also a balance to be struck between the ferret being easy to handle and being a good worker. The hob we have is very sweet and whilst he did try and nip me ferreting yesterday as soon as he realized it was human flesh he stopped so it was more of a kiss than a bite and didn't hurt. But he's not a great worker. The Jill that snapped me and drew blood is an excellent worker and the jill we don't use as she bites too much is incredibly fast and good on the rabbits too good in fact as she tends to kill them underground.

From what I have seen ferrets that are 'biddable' and too friendly tend to make **** workers as they become more like pets than working critters. There is of course a lot to be said for getting ferrets used to the way you smell and then knowing you are going to handle them gently to avoid bites.

+1 the voice of reason ...a biter is no use what so ever.

What absolute rubbish you spout at times , a ferret needs to be biddable , no use being frightened of putting your hands down holes for fear of being bitten.

We could handle the ferrets years ago with hands covered in blood being put down holes with no fear at all of being bitten........

Biddable ferrets do work ..........

I work ferrets too .. If any of mine bit me or who ever I'm out with ( could be my son ) will get a knock ... I work dogs and Jill's but they are handled nearly everyday still and everyday when young ...I would class them as pets as much as working stock and they work really well for me or who I'm with

They don't work as well and you think showing a large bag is relevant? If you had decent ferrets you would of probably got double that.

SRS, don't let your self down with biting on the op's comment. Your video was good fun to watch, however there are a lot of people who work ferrets as you have seen with some of the comments regarding ferrets which bite...

Total novices.

I will give you a tip pal , once a rabbit has bolted into the net place your foot immediately on that hole to stop any others bolting straight behind it . This will increase your bag size.

Also don't talk whilst ferreting.

Also kill the rabbit in the net ....much quicker when you have 4 or 5 bolting at the same time.....

and your a pro at everything I take it. It's a father and 2 of his sons having a morning out , its most probably more about enjoying each others company than getting massive bags, give em a break,

If folk can't take a bit of advice/criticism, then they should think twice before posting a video on a public forum.

Don't think he said that he wanted advice!

I know that perhaps they are not pro's but they are enjoying themselves. We all start somewhere.

And as someone fairly new to the sport and someone that probably doesn't do everything the same way you old experts do, has put me off ever putting a video up.

I think you have the wrong end of the stick. Srs posted the video then argued the toss over how things should be done with people who probably have 30 times the experience that he does. I wouldn't claim to know much about ferreting, myself.

I think (and I hope i'm not being too harsh) that Srs comes across as being very instructional in his videos when he appears to not be up to scratch on the things he is appearing to 'teach'. If the videos just showed someone having a bit of fun with their sport, I think people would be less likely to post criticism.

Alright, fair play! People do seem a bit harsh. I totally take your point tho!
