shoot and be safe
Look up CSJ dog food, and excellent product for the working dog. +1 I'm only on the puppy one at the moment and she loves it.
DJL4
Which one? What protein content and do you give any extras such as fish oils? I use Skinners Field & Trial crunchy (26% protein) and I add a cod liver oil capsule each meal. The only extra's they get are a bit of veg on occasions. Four of the dogs are out picking up 3 or 4 days a week and have plenty of stamina and look well on it. The 5th is a young 8 month dog and has been on Beta pup but is being moved over to Skinners also now. I've tried other makers products but always end up going back to this one. I've no doubt I could feed a "better" product but my own dogs seem to do well on it and with five dogs it's reasonably cost effective for me. darren 67
Csj is not as easily available as skinners to me and only having two spaniels not really worth buying in bulk to make it economical. Thank though all helps when looking.
darren 67
Djl4 thanks that's the response I was hoping for. Not working as much as your dogs but very active as some drives beating and picking up on others. Depending on what's needed. Was wondering if 26% was too high and might be better on 23% protein. gazbev
Check this site out,be sure to put the dogs weight in as well, some of the premium foods are cheaper because there is less **** in them http://www.whichdogfood.co.uk http://www.whichdogfood.co.uk/compare-dog-foods/0341-0733-0295/csj-vs-markus-muehle-vs-skinners
fenboy
My Lab has been on skinners since he was a pup and is doing well on it Unless your dogs are doing lots of work , I would personally just feed the "Maintenance" , the working 24 is a little high in protein if your dogs are not on the go all the time. kent
Packed in complete food, spend more time picking there **** up then I did out with them.I feed raw meat, pasta,Brown bread and vegThis is oh so true, I always hated the stuff but relented. Ran out over the holiday and cooked up a load of rabbit etc with rice and veg. By golly I am getting less poop to collect and dog looks fab. its full of indigestible bulk, I might have to go back to the old ways- its just so convenient to have a bin of the complete stuff outside the kennel
washerboy
I buy minced chicken or beef at 40p a lb and add it to veg, pasta or Brown bread. Maybe not as cheap to feed as complete..but my dogs look better for it I'm sure
955i
I buy minced chicken or beef at 40p a lb and add it to veg, pasta or Brown bread. Maybe not as cheap to feed as complete..but my dogs look better for it I'm sure I'm with you My girl has the lb packs of minced chicken, beef, lamb or tripe with veg and occasional eggs, supplemented with cod liver oil twice a week. Then she always has large raw bones on the go. Works great for her and a blast from the past if you can't remember the last time you saw white dog poo Edited January 6, 2014 by 955i

I'm not sur how good bread and pasta is for your dog, aren't they are the controversial fillers in cheap dog food it being grain? Dogs run on fat and protein, not carbs. If I go raw I will be doing the same as 955 Edited January 6, 2014 by gazbev
washerboy
The minced chicken is bones, feathers the lot. I buy cheap lamb bones from Morrisons and lamb spines from my dog food supplier.
Paul T
Of all the complete dog foods I think Skinners is one of the best. When I used to show dogs they were on Skinners Ruff N Ready and looked very good on it. I used to do a fair bit of winning on it anyway. Now I have working dogs the Skinners just didn't agree with my viz, so I'm on the Beta he had as a pup. I know some will rate other foods higher, but it's what he does best on and I think that's the key - every dog is different and you need to find out what's best for them, not what you would like to feed. I really don't think there's any rights or wrongs. OP, does that help any...?
gazbev
I remember watching a TV programme about fussy eaters and there was a 20 year old bloke whose only solid food in all his years was chips and chicken nuggets and he looked good on it and played football every week. In these educated times we know that he is heading for health problems, yes he may live a long healthy life but the odds are stacked against him, without nutrients from quality foods and antioxidants to help repair the body he's heading for a health nightmare. Some people look at a big bag of food and think they are getting a good deal,if they looked at the ingredients or went to a dog food analysis website that does it all for you they would be in for a shock. A lot if dog foods are packed with filler like beet pulp which goes through the dog with no nutritional benefit to the dog and come out the back, the filler is put in to fool the buyer...sometimes as much as 40 percent filler..so take the price you pay for a cheap bag and reduce the weight by 40 percent it will be the same as a premium food with quality ingredients....look at these two http://www.whichdogfood.co.uk/compare-dog-foods/0303-0341/markus-muehle-vs-skinners Edited January 6, 2014 by gazbev
Marki
I feed my dogs on Markus Muhle or Lukullus. Significantly better than the CSJ I tried which gave them both bad stomachs. Works out roughly £1 a day. Nothing really.
Millomite
I have fed either CSJK9 CP30 or No Grainer which are the high quality stuff, unfortunately I have had to move away from them as the product just wasn't consistent enough. I have just ordered two bags of fish4dogs salmon food. It looks expensive on the website, but if you register as a breeder you get it for just over 30 quid a bag and its consituent ingredients look pretty decent Analytical Constituents:Crude Protein 26%, Fat Content 12%, Crude Ash 7.5%, Crude Fibres 2.5%, Omega-3 Fats 1% Composition:Salmon (27%), Potato (21%), Pea Flour (19%), Salmon Meal (11.7%), Salmon Oil (10.7%), Beet Pulp, Brewers Yeast , Minerals
washerboy
I still have half a bag of no grainer that I use as mixer with my beef and chicken mince.
