Steve_in_Devon
I have had the family carrying on at me that they want other dog. At the moment we have an 8 year old English Springer. The problem with getting other dog is that I want a GSP but my family want a small dog. What has now made me decide to possibly go with this is that if we get a small dog now, the next dog we get will be my choice. So speaking the wife and kids (3 boys) on what they consider a small dog. They want a wirehaired Daschund. The cost of them seems to be ridiculous, so I have been looking around as some options. I did not really want a terrier as I have had a Jack Russell before so was looking for something different or a cross. Has anyone any experience with the likes of a Beagle cross Jack Russell or Jack Russell cross Daschund. Are there any other crosses out there that anyone would recommend? kent
Is this as a pet then? Those Tackels (wire haired dashund) can be an aggressive little so and so and noisy to boot

byjovecarruthers
Border Terrier. Awesome little dogs and you don't look like a fanny when you're left holding it outside the shops whilst the Memsahib is in shopping!

Soft as anything and he loves kids but soon switches on when there is something small and furry for him to dispatch. He especially loves coming to the grouse moor and flushing grouse for me Edited January 13, 2014 by oscarsdad

It doenst like my Springer and goes for her whenever it sees her. So wasnt quiet sure able them, I do like the look of them though.

Tough? explain please hardy? aggressive? Game? courageous? Its not as if a house pet should be for personal protection and it would be as much use as a chocolate fire guard against a swift right boot from an agressor

Mine is rarely on the lead, has as good a recall as a terrier could have and even if he trots ahead he turns and waits for me, I wouldn't take your neighbours as a good example at all. Mine is great with other dogs and my cocker gets away with dragging him around the room by his face. Being a terrier, if another dog starts then he will kick off but he rarely if ever starts it. They are also very practical - my cocker will come back from a walk soaking wet and caked in mud whilst Oscar will look like he hasn't even been out. This is his more normal position when at home rather than out with me... Maybe tough is not the right word, but want a dog that doesnt mind being outside all weather, getting dirty etc. Not just a lap dog. You just described the border terrier.... As for outside in all weather... I am yet to find weather or location he hasn't loved! Edited January 13, 2014 by oscarsdad

Catweazle
Those pictures are Calender quality, lovely looking dog. My neighbour has one crossed with a Pug, it's a tough little thing, but squeaks like a mouse when it tries to bark.

gazbev
Another one for a Border they have a lot going for them just put a lot of effort into socialising it. Mine could be let off the lead anywhere, brilliant with people and had a brilliant nose for game I kid you not. They are not yappy but brilliant alarm dogs, you won't hear mine bark for days but if someone comes down the drive he will bark once and come and find me. My missus wanted the Border,I wasn't fussed about them but he bonded with me and followed me everywhere,so loyal The only downside is if you have any small pets he will have them if you leave them unattended, any rats, rabbits, squirrels they will kill them,it can be embarrassing in a local park I know what you mean about keeping them sweet,I'm having a Springer this year.ATB
