casts_by_fly
Hi All, My favorite season of the year is upon us (pigeon roost shooting) however I've got a dodgy rotator cuff muscle. I was at the physio last night and it isn't torn, but the muscle is tight. Obviously I'm not missing roost shooting for the world, so I'm trying to figure out my best course of action. Anyone had to shoot through with an injured rotator cuff? Did you find a heavier gun or lighter gun to be better? It is my trigger arm that is the problem, so I'm not using the hurt arm to hold the weight of the gun. I suspect my best bet is a heavier gun with lighter cartridges to minimize the recoil, but that is easier said than done with the set of guns I shoot. The alternative is a lighter 20 and lighter cartridges. Anyone know of a light recoiling 21-24g 20 ga cartridge with #6 shot? thanks rick
shakin stevens
I have a damaged rota cuff, had a scan last year that confirmed the damage, I've had the steroid injections next action is the operation, last year was the worst year I couldn't stand any recoil and missed loads of stuff. This is season has been loads better maybe the injections have helped but I have stayed away from punchy cartridges, usually find my neck goes first with the muscles tensing up due to stressing the injury, gun weight is not a problem I shoot a 22lb single 4 bore with no problems ! I found shooting punchy steel rounds in a light 12b hard work really does turn me inside out so I've stayed clear for now. Do plenty of rota cuff exercises and you should be fine, I just shoot a mk 60 12 bore for pigeons with gamebore clear pigeon and find the combo works for me. kent
I decided to call an early end to this season, I was shooting badly through shoulder issues (this time my left) I have had years of right side issues after being a discus thrower through my younger days (the training I did would get a coach locked up these days ). The physio says I am actually down to 100 degrees inclined free movement vertically (this explains why I mostly miss my favourite over head shot), though I have been forcing my way through that - not great for a smooth swing and steel shot! laterally she says negative free movement outwards (what I have hit has been mostly left to right crossers, right to left has been poor). The exercises aint working this time and they want to inject me on Friday, researched it and decided they aint doing it now. I can cope with pain and it carries too much risk for me personally without full knowledge of the problem, you can only have it three times and it wacks your sugar levels up (I am diabetic). With me they say is either a partial tendon tear or a frozen shoulder in the capsule, maybe rumatics, so its clear they don't actually know were to put it . Want to wait the five weeks I was quoted last week for the scans doing before I take it any further on that front. decided on rest and manipulation of the muscles, but I am bored out my box even if the pain has lessened from not using it. Got a roof to put on a building and a load of tree work here! Missing the end of the season is a killer and the dog keeps running to the back of the truck and not getting why we aren't going whenever its still dark out front. I was physically sick with the pain of it the last week and am regularly waking in the night wife thinks I am nuts not taking pills but the normal ones give me indigestion and codeine gives me constipation, I suggested Scotch but that soon disappeared They are totally sure its torn are they? that sounds like a operation or rest to me but I bet they get you doing stuff with it. My (unqualified medical) opinion is physio should only come after a tear has healed and I have had one or two
shakin stevens
No , think I did it at work felling trees on the railway, worst injury I've had in years it effects all your back muscles and neck. Did the '22lb single 4 bore' do the damage in the first place?
phaedra1106
My left rotator cuff was damaged in a car crash about 6 years ago, been through several courses of physio, cortisone injections, acupunture and having the shoulder strapped back. None it has made much of a difference, the acupuncture stopped the shooting pains down my arm but the last 2 lots of ultrasound guided cortisone injections just made the shoulder worse, felt like I had grit in the joint. I now have a noticeable lump on the top of my shoulder and it's arched forwards. I still have restricted movement and reduced strength. I've seen 3 different consultants and they all say chances are an operation will only make things worse so looks like I'm stuck with it until it gets too bad to put up with. Bad news is I had to give up archery, no way on earth I could hold a bow and draw it, good news is that I'm right handed so it doesn't affect my full bore shooting too much but it can be quite painful shooting clays for any length of time. brett1985
i have ongoing cuff and shoulder issues... on a good day i can shoot 2-3 boxes through my over and under and be ok, but most of the time i use my S/A. S/A would definately be the way to go imho, just a cheap remy 1100 or hatstand would do the trick. low recoil, soft shooting. i put over a slab through mine on a pigeon day last year (when my shoulder was at its worst) and barely felt it. just a thought... casts_by_fly
I They are totally sure its torn are they? that sounds like a operation or rest to me but I bet they get you doing stuff with it. My (unqualified medical) opinion is physio should only come after a tear has healed and I have had one or two No, it isn't torn. It started by being sore back in November one evening while working out. Since then, certain exercises have made it sort and certain motions I'm not able to do. We have a physio at our gym who I'd seen before and who my personal trainer went to when he had an injured RC. His opinion is that it is just a tight muscle and not torn. He massaged it last night and I have exercises to do a couple times a day to loosen it back up. We should be able to fix it back to new with stretching exercises and then muscle strength building in a couple weeks, but that couple of weeks overlaps prime roost shooting. thanks rick

That's what I'm debating, but also is my difficulty. I have 2 semis- one is a sub 7 lb Franchi so no major recoil bleed via a gas system. The other is my goose gun which is a nice and heavy mossberg, but I would only be able to shoot heavy loads from it (42g lead) or 3" steel. I might have to do a recoil test comparing all 3 options tonight/tomorrow with a couple cartridges from each before I shoot a bunch on Fri/Sat. thanks rick

Got to watch some of those PTs they often speak unqualifed rubbish- even worse than me on medical matters Just pour yourself a big Scotch and stop all that gym stuff, nobody does it for life anyhow If you want to get and stay fit do more proper shooting and fishing trips

welshwarrior
I tore mine playing rugby a few years ago. I used a semi auto to get around it soaked up most of the recoil.

It took over four weeks to get my first appointment with them, Tell us what you disagree with might be more helpful than just saying wrong hey? Harnser
Iam shooting with a damaged rotator cuff in my left calf and a very sore left knee caused by a knee replacement surgery . Man up and get through it . Nothing will stop me shooting while I can still stand up . Harnser.
