I'm a huge fan of Eminem and yes it can read like poetry without the beat but henobestlyricist, that's almost laughable. Google and read the lyrics from Chris De Burgh's early work, way before the tragedy that is Lady in Red, works like Crusader, The girl with april in her eyes, Spanish train, Borderline, In a country churchyard, I'm counting on you, Where peaceful waters flow, etc etc.

 

It is gothic, haunting and stunningly well written as you read it but sounds incredible too.

Also Al Stewart's early stuff.
