Hamster
I'm a huge fan of Eminem and yes it can read like poetry without the beat but henobestlyricist, that's almost laughable. Google and read the lyrics from Chris De Burgh's early work, way before the tragedy that is Lady in Red, works like Crusader, The girl with april in her eyes, Spanish train, Borderline, In a country churchyard, I'm counting on you, Where peaceful waters flow, etc etc. It is gothic, haunting and stunningly well written as you read it but sounds incredible too. Gordon R
Elvis Costello Even in a perfect world, where everyone was equal, I'd still own the film rights and be working on the sequel. The lyrics on Allison are a little less flippant, but from the heart - brilliant.

-Mongrel-
Freddie Mercury for voice, lyrics and presence ! Seeing as the discussion is about the best lyricist, the voice and presence don't come into it. He was a great performer, but no great lyricist. Thunderbird
Tell you what, and in a different vein, I know a fair few of the best lyricist have already been mentioned, but you've got to take your hat off to Carter USM. Had their greatest hits on the car and some of that punning wordplay is sheer magic.
