dazzyboi
Kinda shocked me.. We have been together for 2 and a half years She is finishing college in july studying beauty therapy, i phoned her earlier and she said that she had the oppotunity to go on an 8 month cruise working on a ship. We are talking about it properly tomorrow. I love her to bits and will support her every step of the way, and ill be here for her when she gets back. But i cant help feeling abit down. Its not defenate yet and this is the first iv heard of it. There could be a chance that it might not happen, but then again it might do. Its shorter than a year but still 8 months is a long time. What if she decides she likes it and wants to do longer? She did also mention that if she does she will be loaded, she has known people who have done it and come back with enough money to get a steady mortgage on a house. Which would be nice, we have talked about moving in together. This of course means us not seeing each other for 8 months.

Baldrick
Daz, you've overlooked one thing. If she's part of a cruise ship's complement/crew, she will be able to get outrageously cheap prices for holidays for you both. You can go out an join her for a week etc. An old Uni friend of mine is a navigating officer on one of the big monsters that float around the Caribbean, and from the moment he joined the firm, he was able to exploit the cheap prices on behalf of friends and family. Worth looking into? You're right about the money though - you earn a lot on cruise ships. You get lots of regular and generous tips. And you don't have much chance to spend anything. Didnt think of that Although i did think that i probably wouldnt go the full time without seeing her at all, weather or not she got a weekened release once maybe or if i could go and see her. Will ask tomorrow.

Cranfield
The strange thing is, if it was a chap going out to the Middle East on a contract, or a soldier away on duty , nobody would think twice about it, as it happens all the time. Because its a woman, why should it be any different ? It will be a great opportunity for her to see places (briefly), that she may not normally get to see, to earn some serious money and gain some good experience (looks good on the CV). The staff on cruise ships work hard, with long hours and it is not one big holiday. Wish her luck, tell her you love her and want to talk about getting married when she returns. If she thinks you are serious, she may not even go (although she would be a fool not to ).
njc110381
8 months is a real tester for you both. Only you know how you feel, and more importantly, how likely she is to come back! If she's the steady and trustable type, then just work through it. 8 months is like one percent of a lifetime so it'll soon fly by. I kind of know how you feel. My Girl was going to go away to uni, but it turned out she thought she'd miss me too much and went to a local one instead! I'm glad, because I'd hate not seeing her. If it means her coming back with enough cash to back up a mortgage to set you both up in a first home together, then I'd stick with her and go shooting lots to keep you busy for the time she's gone

Spend the 8 months with yer buddies living it up, you only live once and there are plenty more fish in the sea for a cool living cat like you.
