Sorry mine says buy and hold but due for renewal soon so things have changed again

The old Winchester .22 subs white box were 38 grain the newer ones blue box were 40 grain the latest are 42 grain

Please read the box before use ,I noticed this yesterday on an advert in the shooting press clearly says 42 grain on the box

That's over 10% more weight on the old ones

Just tried the following brands in a new .22 - RWS, Winchester, Geko, Remington, Fiocci, CCI - and of all of them the Winchesters (black box) were the worst performing AND looked nasty. Rough finish and inconsistent shape/marks on them. Compare them to an RWS for example and there seems to be a big difference in manufacturing and that surely must affect their comparative flights. The CCI's didn't look that great either...and we're the next worst in my gun. RWS and Remi's came out best.

The new forms are national now I believe, I have just renewed and that was the word from BASC. Its an easier system and there is no more ammo counting each renewal or variation you just comply with the max amount.

As regards Winchester subs, the old white box stuff shot ok for me it was only at extended ranges around 100 yards that the Lapua (that became sk) consistently and plainly out did them. I tried a box of the new black box ones last summer and they shot very well at 100 so I figured I might as well economise and get a full brick. It didn't work out I had light strikes and failure to eject (all down to general inconsistencies and likely out of spec rim thickness) after trying about 25 I took them back to the shop. Malmo Guns in Lancaster gave me a more expensive box of my usual SK in one for one exchange for my bother and travel.

The question was asked about my gun but at every new brick it gets a full service, cycled the first given box great and shot them fine and has munched through large amounts of different .22 ammo over the years without a single complaint ever- not a one! I think this points to rushed manufacture and sourcing of new raw material suppliers in this time of world ammo shortages. Harder brass alloys etc.?

If your not bothered for hollow points Green Tag target ammo from CCI shoots very, very well in most guns BTW and moderates just fine up here. Target ammo takes less wind in practice I find. Just another option to think of if your stuck :good:

I was out yesterday to zero my 22lr at 100yds.I use winchester subsonic and have noticed that they are not as consistent as they used to be.I did zero at 50yds first and they are fairly accurate but i was getting an odd stray bullet.

At 100yds the bullets were not placed on the target as consistently as i would have liked so have left the zero at 50yds..

I have also noticed a small number of bullet heads from the batch i am currently using that were slightly loose in the brass.

The width of the bullet heads must vary a little as well as some do not chamber as easily as others.

I think 100 a bit far for a zero on a .22 lr, am I reading that correct? you would have one heck of a peak trajectory

Although I have read about the 42Max I have neither shot them or seen any for sale (I was under the impression they had yet to reach the UK),so whether they will be better or worse than the 40gr remains to be seen.

And where on this thread does it say we are comparing the 42grain MAX with the blue box 40grains? Telling people to "read the box" is a little patronising, and using insulting comments because you have made a mistake is playground behaviour.

Deershooter, this thread was trogging along nicely with some useful shared info and findings......then you came along just to cause trouble.

You can carry on disrupting the thread as much as you wish. You are just making yourself look more ridiculous by the minute

For the rest of the contributors, I have sent an email to Winchester explaining some of our findings and concerns. I won't hold my breath, but if I get a reply, I will pop it on here :good:
