motty
The barley is at various stages of growth on the farms I shoot, thankfully. I shall be keeping a close eye on some over the next month. The rape in places is now out of flower and well podded up. I saw some pigeons yesterday that were landing on the top of the tall plants to have a peck at the pods. lakeside1000
I have no rape on my perms, been bashing rabbits with the air rifle but need to get back to the pigeons and crows, had a few corvids on some newly sown sugar beet, but I've just received my new crow caller so I'm off tomorrow to see if it makes any difference, normally get half a dozen, without the caller, should be interesting to see any increase,as for pigeons, Apart from a good flight line over a new perm , they are few and far between, but as you say the barley is well on and they should start hitting the ears soon, just need to check out a couple of fields, see if there are any areas already flattened or showing damage. lots of fledgling pigeons in the trees, the adults should be well into rearing the second clutch by now, Im always disappointed when I make a good shot on a bird only to find its a juvenile, no meat on them , just a waste of a cartridge, I'd rather let them grow on and whack them in the autumn when they have had time to fatten up a bit. Lots of rabbits in the barley fields, farmer keeps asking for more visits to reduce the numbers but now the crops getting much thicker its hard to get a good sight line on them, also lots of tiny young rabbits again, they seem to breed like '''''rabbits. Crops and grass both just too long now to get a bead on them... Will probably switch to a bit of fishing until they start swathing the rape in July.
