camojohn
The peas where I shoot are about 40cm tall. Is it best to have my decoys above the crop, or should I just have then down the furrows in between? Also what pattern do you find works best on peas? pegasus bridge
On standing wheat, I use small bean canes to display some deeks on top of the wheat , I think it works well as it's more visible, and the birds don't rationalise that it shouldn't be like that, it would at least be worth a go! aga man
Yeah i would agree put your deeks above the crop either on cradles or canes, they need to be visible. As for pattern if winds are fairly light just put the decoys out facing all directions but as always leave space for incoming birds to land. Another thing to bear in mind is how you will pick your shot birds. A good dog is key in this situation. No point killing birds if you cannot pick them. motty
Decoys are pointless if they cannot be seen. They should always be visible to incoming pigeons.
pigeon controller
As above, the clues in the word " decoying" if they are not visible your not decoying . They may look stupid to you but if they are in the top of the crop they are visible. You must think like a pigeon I'm hungry and they are feeding

Bazooka
Some good advice above. So long as they are visible. Been doing some experimenting over the past few seasons, with some great results. Made some larger decoys in the floater style to stand above the standard ones. With some amazing results. Decoys with wing spans of 4 ft on straight sturdy poles stood above the normal standard sizes of pattern feeders and bouncers. Visibility & invisibility is the best way forward. Visibility of your decoys and the invisibility of you.

Bazooka
will do. Soon as I can work out how to take a picture and then add it to the site. You will no doubt be laughing you tots off but they work. The birds don't seem at all bothered by them once they descend in to the pattern. It has to make things more visible for them. Especially on still days with no wind. The bign's must just at first appear to be closer to them but descending towards the pattern? Works though. Give it a go and bag up. Penelope
Wif an idea like that, this time next year you'll be a mill'yonaire. in America the have Canada goose decoys which they lay in and shoot from! birdsallpl
Wif an idea like that, this time next year you'll be a mill'yonaire. Not so daft. Last year there was a lot of abandoned car wrecks in a field next to the basin at Montrose. They looked awful and I thought someone had been doing some illegal banger racing and just left them where they had stopped. I mentioned it to the Warden and he told me that guides had put them there as hides for Widgeon shooting. Apparently the birds get used to them and take no notice until some moron starts shooting at them. It takes all types I know and we shouldn't judge. But I just found the whole thing appalling.
