webber
Usually I don't but sometimes I do. Within a second or so I make a number of judgments based on experience. I suppose that to be technically pedantic shops should ask to see an SGC / FAC. Remember the certificate allows the holder to be in possession of a gun / rifle. If you are stood in a shop handling a prospective purchase you are technically in possession. Therefore if the shop allows a none certificate holder to handle / possess a gun / rifle I suppose that technically they have aided and abetted . This is a good one. My FLO is in the office from 7:30, I'll give him a call. webber
Bobba
How do you think this discussion would be going if a random bloke had walked into a gunshop and asked to hold a gun. Imagine he batted the member of staff in the face with the butt and made off with the gun. Even worse would be if he took a cartridge from his pocket and loaded the gun and..........................?..........?
bostonmick
I have never been asked for sgc until the point of sale.have spent hours looking at guns and my rfd has always been extremely helpful. But then I have bought most of my guns from him.perhaps some dealers have a lot of dreamers coming into their shops just passing time.and we all know how frustrating that is when trying to sell something. webber
I contacted Merseyside Police Firearms Licensing department a little after 7:30 this morning. My usual contact is on holiday, however I received a call back about 30 minutes ago with their answer. Persons in possession of guns or rifles should be suitably licensed to do so. Handling a gun in a shop is possession. Advise to RFDs is ask for the certificate prior to handing over the gun. No license = no touching, but looking is fine. webber

Guest
How do you think this discussion would be going if a random bloke had walked into a gunshop and asked to hold a gun. Imagine he batted the member of staff in the face with the butt and made off with the gun. I'd have thought we could all wind our necks in a little bit and show our cert if asked politely. There is no reason not to be shown a gun whilst waiting for your SGC to land (or if its at home) but engage in some discussion. I suspect if I turned up in a Porche dealership in a boilersuit and wellies they wouldn't let me drive a car. My local Porsche dealership just takes your money they don't mind who you are along as you can pay the bill !!! Travlaa
Before I had even got my SGC, went to essex gun and he let me try several for fit. He even handed me a kreighoff to try, even though he knew it was well out of my price range.
BRNDL
Take a picture of your cert on your smart phone if you have one. Hopefully that should suffice.
countryman
I know of one Gun shop in my area that asks for your licence before he will even unlock any thing, and he is the most miserable *** you could wish to meet, i have even brought guns off of him in the past. Scully
Going back years I used to get asked now and then, but hardly ever now. Usually only when buying cartridges from a dealer I dont know.

As the word Advise is used, then the answer might well be in black and white.... Looking at some of the reply's it appears some gun shop owners have less social skills than farmers.... HDAV
YOu know everyone says it fine to take your mate (with no SGC) to a field (you dont own or lease) you have permission on and let him shoot it............. WOuldnt try it in merseyside as they seem to think "holding" is possession............ guess it is in terms of Drug law.............
