Is it worth having bike insurance ?

Looking to get a tidy road bike for getting about on etc. I am off to university in 2 weeks and it would be handy to be able to get around Bristol without using the car all the time and being stuck in traffic etc.

Was looking to get one around £700-1000, not a small chunk of change and naturally I am a bit worried about dishing this out and then anything happening to it or it being stolen.

I have a decent size room on campus so can keep the bike IN my room probably and it would be locked up when left ofcourse.

Just thinking is it worth looking to take out a insurance if its not too expensive ?! Anyone know the approx cost of a policy ?

I don't need cover for events and all that, just fancy a half tidy bike I can get around on and also some leisure rides. Looking at the Giant Defy 1 bike if anyone is interested

Speaking from experience, I've had two nicked in and around Uni, both decent bikes and a third from town (that was a cheapo job) just down the hill from campus all three locked up well, i wouldn't say it is worth it. Most people get pretty cheap bikes that don't matter so much if they get nicked. saves spending £700+ on the bike then extra for insurance, only for it to get stolen?

A cheapo, uninviting bike will get you from A to B as effectively, it just might get you there a little slower!

Check your house policy, it will cover peddle cycles just need to check what their maximum is without specifying. Typically can be between 500 & 1500. Just renewed mine with the AA and listed a specified mountain bike with a value of £4800 only added £23 to the premium.

Cannot see the point in spending that sort of cash on a bike that is going to be a target for low life -if you are "into" cycling then it would make more sense to buy a decent bike for pleasure use and an Ebay jobby for work-my bike is an early but immaculate Carrera Vulcan alloy frame etc-cost me £40 on the bay.
