keg
Just to play devils advocate here, We as the general public always want lower prices so that's what the manufacturers give us. Price of everything and value of nothing springs to mind..... When i worked for Sony, the average forecasted lifespan for brown goods was 5-7 years. spanj
The difference isn't where it was made but the engineering and materials that went into it - and the price point it was designed to. agreed, although price point hadnt been invented
Oxfordshooter
Which was of course abolished 4 years before Victoria began her reign. The British Empire was part-funded by slavery and by forcing countries to trade with us. The legacy of this such as the early railways and plenty of capital enabled the scale of Victorian engineering to take place. Also if you don't think that the millions of British men, women and children who were forced to work in dangerous factories and mills by their masters for a pittance in pay was not a type of slavery then have another think about it. amateur
I've got a Casio LCD calculator that I've had in continuous use since 1979. The casing is a bit battered from being slung into a briefcase and carted all around the country - but nothing that a little parcel tape couldn't fix. I change the batteries when the display starts getting faint ( about every 5 years or so )
four-wheel-drive
I always used to go by the old saying buy the best that you can afford as quolity will always last longer but in todays world that no longer applies they all use cheep components that do not last its the same with cars at about ten years old it would be full of rust but still had a good engine etc today they have no rust but the electrics make it to expensive to repair them I am afraid we just cannot win. Fatcatsplat
I buy all that stuff from Tesco, Asda and such like with the 5 or 10 year guarantee you get with them - Pretty much, you buy once and when it breaks down you take it back and they give you a new one with the warranty starting all over again - No arguments, no quibbles and no long drawn out negotiation. There are hundreds of kids in my house and the washing machine and dryer probably do 3 loads a day minimum - Works a treat.

Or you could just pay a bit more to buy a decent machine to start with (like a Miele), and expect it to last 20 years.
super sharp shooter
I wish my washing machines would last longer than a couple of years. Just had to buy one yesterday.

In your dreams I think I buy Sainsburys kettles they are guarenteed for a year I think but they never outlast the guarentee so when I get my refund I buy a new one I then staple the receipt to the box all ready to take back as soon as it goes wrong so fair I have had four new ones all for and initial outlay of £4.99 Edited September 15, 2014 by four-wheel-drive

It will break. Name me one great brand that over the last twenty years hasn't been devalued in some way or other with their lack of longevity and quality control. Expensive, yes, but if you take inflation into account over 20 years - the price is pretty much the same. Read the articles here - very enlightening. http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/help/buying-advice/washing-machine.html This one puts the price of current machines into perspective http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/help/buying-advice/washing-machine/3066-how-much-should-a-washing-machine-cost.html
keg
Yup. Take a look at TVs in teh late 70s and see what you get for the same money now. We keep getting told we are being ripped off then start to believe it.
Nial
When we bought our house in 2000 the wife insisted on a Miele washing machine, it was ~£700 (we were both on good money and no kids). It broke down in the first year but thy fixed it for free and 'upgraded the sofware'. It then broke down a couple of years later. You have to use Miele technicians and the crowd covering Scotland weren't able to see us for about a week. I got a Zanussi on line for £300 odd and it's still going strong.
