sarol
need help with rat bait. i have a rat (rats) at the bottom of garden about 30 metres. it/they won't stop long enough to shoot. so i'm trying to trap have had a couple. using all kinds of trap from fenn, snap and live trap cage. have trail cameras videoing them sniffing and ignoring the traps for more than a month. tried peanut butter, chocolate spread, beef paste, chicken paste, tuna paste, bird seed and peanuts. can stand in side back door and watch him/them running around with my yukon ranger's and they are big enough to trip the PIR flood light. looking for a bait that they can't walk by. any ideas. don't like poison. moving is not a option!! SEshooter
Chappie dog food. When they cut the rape that surrounds my land I got mobbed by rats. I smear it on a rock so they can't run off with it. shoot them when they come out for a munch. Had no luck with traps.
Kes
Poison is better these days, just place it carefully under something badgers cant shift. Countrywide stores do a fair range of all methods.

Old farrier
Put it in the blender so they have to lap it up it slows them up enough for a shot All the best Of
sarol
some great advice all helps but unless i lay on the kitchen floor for hours in wait. a good bait would help.
bigadam
A ham bone drill through it and tie it to something they go mad for it
Old farrier
Ok If you've got rats big rats they need a food source you can find that and remove it Or you can try to put a more appealing one in place Rats won't enter new or newly placed traps for weeks Permanent tunnels are a good idea if you have a historic problem Or sit out and wait with the gun All the best Of
Dougy
I used to use mashed potatoes with brasem in ( its a fishing additive smells gorgeous ) as stated earlier they cant run off with it.
SEshooter
If I'm shooting at nite as i don't have vision, I put an empty dog food can on the concrete. Leave a bit of food in the bottom and crush the open end a bit. As soon as I hear the can rattle I flick the lamp on with the scope pretty much on the target already. Usually gives me a few seconds to get a shot off before it bolts.
pistolgrip
Live trap cage, streaky bacon try not to get your scent on the cage shooting is great fun but a trap is there 24/7 but the ONLY solution is shovel smoker and terrier father in law swears by chocolate spread but he also said I was lucky to get his daughter so I don't trust him anymore. Kes
The favoured bait for shooting by professional ratters is Nutella diluted with vegetable oil its apparently rat heaven. The diution is to ensure they dont just run off with a bit but stay and lick the liquid. Bet your bottom dollar though that they are breeding and poison is the very best solution. But think about a good professional poison placed properly, every time you bait you could be attracting other rats from a wider area increasing your problem,
billywoodsman
A trail of bread leading into a live catch cage with a nice piece of crust on the trigger hook works good for me.
rimfire4969
If they all use the same way on to your place a well placed tunnel trap would work well. It a method I use around my chickens along with poison. I find its the only way to constantly keep them under control.
KFC
A tin of Chappie with nail holes in it so they stay and lap at the holes or pieces of wet bread so they can't run off with it.
lurchers
If they are not going in the traps no more its called behavourial resistance, once you have caught some in traps next to others it stops them from going to them as they no it causes harm.all you can do now is bait with poison which will have effect with in 3 to 5 days.remove bird feeders ie peanuts, chicken feed if you have any as this is the antidote, vit k1 which will help them pull throught it.or if you no some lads with a smoker and terriers let them have some fun 😀😀😀. lurchers
Look over the neighbouring property where you have seen them coming from they could be in a compost heap or the bin type as its a food source and its very warm for them mate. sarol
both neighbours have totally over grown gardens full of weeds. just spent 2 hours laying on my belly in the garden and not a sign.
rich1985
Just poison them, does it really matter about counting the dead, just getting rid would be my number1 option. Use a whole bait poison don't get the kibbled ****. Don't use poison and give the rats anything to eat maize based as it's high in vitamin k and that is antidotal.
