NffcFarmerBoy
Hey guys, so I've eart some money over the summer holidays and have a buget of around £650 and would like to buy a nice side by side for the upcoming game season. I've browsed the net and have seen the AYA number 4 is in the price range and looks decent. Anyway I'm going to my local gun shop next week to have a look at what they have in but just wanted to see peoples opinion on them. Help would be very much appreciated. They look beautiful guns for the money, just want to find out opinions on them before I go looking next weekend.

Put some pics up if you decide to get one i have recently got one to replace my number 2.......dead chuffed with it.......but the chokes were tooooo tight 3/4 and full......im having them reamed out to ...just tighter than cylinder and 1/4...which for me is dead right for decoying........ NffcFarmerBoy
Thankyou for the offer Tis1979 but I'd much rather buy one from my gunshop where I could get some warranty on it, what do you think to it though? I know AYA are quality guns but I've never handled a number 4 before, just a number 2 which my grandad owns.
JohnfromUK
AyA No 4 is a good gun - and value for money 2nd hand. I would see if you can try one or two, as 26" barrels are not to everyone's taste. If you are tall/long armed, you may find 26" lacks weight forward of your left hand - which can make it tricky to maintain the swing. (i.e. - it stops easily!). I'm medium size and build (about 5 ft 9" and 12 stone) and find 26" barrels too short for me. I have 2 12 bore AyAs, one with 2 sets of barrels, so I have a choice of 28" or 30" barrels - and I like the 28" best. Having said all that, some people get on fine with short barrels, but it would be sensible to see how you do before spending money. I believe that 28" is a common size on AyAs, but 30" are not common.
mickyh
I bought one a few years ago. I had a number three when I was a teenager and always dreamed of the no 4 because it was the ejector version. Anyway I bought a 1980's beauty from my local Gunshop, mint condition and very tight for £400 28" barrells and had them both bored out to cylinder I dont use anything else on the farm and I occasionally shoot sporting clays with it. Any gunsmith can fix them, there are loads of parts available and if you manage to shoot it slack, it can be tightened up with new parts for a reasonable price. In my opinion the best make of shotguns to ever come out of Spain. We sold hundreds back in the day and had very few problems with them Good luck with your purchase but remember there are loads for sale so its a buyers market, wait and buy the best one you can find. Your budget will get an almost unused one! Cheers Mick.

Gunman
If you don't mind shorter barrels then you can often find a AyA 25 or best boxlock for the same money . Hate to say it as an English man but the AyA takes a lot of beating .Only things to watch out for is the age of the gun and that it has not been abused or "done up " to hide the fact that the gun has had the stuffing shot out of it . look for good original . ayano3
I own an aya no4 with 26" barrels. Lovely gun for the price. Mines bored Improved cylinder and just less than quarter. I shoot well with it even though I am a big lad and use it on game shoots, roost shooting and occasionally decoying too. I would not be afraid to buy private as there is not a lot to go wrong with them. A new bottom hinge pin for mine cost me £30 to get done. For the budget you have you should get a very good gun. My no4 with Rhia roost shooting.

Gunman
Joint pin on all AyAs are knock in pins so it may put the barrels back on face and as a result give more bite but it will not tighten the action .

rtaylor
I've had a yeoman for the last 6 years and it's never put a foot wrong. My first gun and I won't be getting rid of it. No. 4s are very nice but if you can get another couple hundred together you should be able to get a no. 2, although you will have to go further afield than your local. I wouldn't be put off by buying it privately. You will get a much better deal than from a gunshop. How long a warranty will they give you on a second hand gun? I would be surprised if it's longer than 3 months which isn't really worth it for the extra you will pay in my opinion.

ditchman
This one is "not in the white..arwite....buffed up"...not everyones cuppa tea...but i prefer it Edited September 29, 2014 by ditchman
Gunman
Technically "in the white" refers to a built up barrel and action , stocked or not ,in an unfinished state . Your gun has a "brushed" or bright finished action . Not quite the same thing .
mickyh
Why did you have it bored out to cylinder both barrels? Did you not find you had a lot of runners at any distance? Well the Gent I worked for, Steve Smith of Newcastle who ran the Clay Shoot and the Gunshop in the Grainger Market told me to ! Everyone who was around at that time did too, for Skeet and game shooting. Very high Pheasants as well, he was invited to lots of top shoots just to put birds in the bag. He was the best shot I had ever seen. I believe he was either an England team member or an Olympic shot. Maybe someone with a better memory than me will know? I spent a couple of years working for him and I'm honoured to have known him-a true Gent. He collected Woodwards the best gun in his opinion, I remember a pair of 28 bore o/u worth about 40 k then ! Fair comment, I myself have been shooting driven game for over 40 years and shoot 1/4 & 1/4 both barrels. And we have some some very high birds in our part of North Wales, especially in late January. Can I ask what cartridges you use for game in cylinder & cylinder chokings. Edited September 29, 2014 by browning123
