fenboy
My extended choke is stuck in my auto despite me putting copper grease on the thread . Its been soaking in diesel for 24 hrs and I still cannot budge it , not helped by the **** choke key that is provided ( I must get a better one ). So any other ideas ? I do not fancy heating the barrel but at the moment it is residing in the freezer to see if that will work tomorrow !
aga man
If you don't fancy the heat thing why not try a kettle of hot water poured over the choke then tight grip with a tea towel or similar. The heat might be enough without using a blowtorch.
69chris
hot air gun should do the trick without causing any damage
la bala
I would think if you have it in the freezer fenboy, a hair dryer on the choke will move it. good luck.

Hair dryer on barrel and cool the choke! warming the choke will expand it................. try tapping the choke with a mallet a few times before trying the unscrewing

welshwarrior
Hot air on the frozen barrel tap the choke to shock the threads then unscrew. If that doesn't work suck choke tools the answer but will probably damage your choke.
arjimlad
Perhaps put the choke key in a bench vice and then turn the barrel for more leverage, whilst trying the above ?
fenboy
Right , after much soaking , heating , freezing, tapping and brute force I have managed to get the choke to move a little but its still very hard to turn. I have put it back into soak in the diesel and hopefully that will be able to soak in better now and I will have another go tomorrow . I am hoping that the choke tube has not been cross threaded , to be fair from the start the chokes have been very tight to get in and out , the pro bore chokes use a much coarser thread than I have had on any other gun. Westley
Can I ask what make both the gun and the choke are ? I have never managed to get a choke stuck, but have unstuck many chokes for those who have. The diesel oil and hair dryer, freezer combo have always worked for me. I find it unusual that even after releasing the initial binding, you still can not get the thing out.
HDAV
Was it hard to screw in when fitted?
fenboy
All the chokes have been hard to screw in and out , its a Remington versamax , the stuck choke was a Briley extended.
Big Mat
What choke key is it? I have two different keys here if they are any help.
fenboy
I should be ok now thanks matt , now its part way out the diesel should penetrate and free it off.
Westley
I too use Briley extended in my Invector + Miroku, all screw in and out by hand. I did have a Mod. choke in Briley extended that was tight to install and remove, but ONLY in the top barrel. It did not appear to screw all the way in properly. I bought the choke second hand from the local gunshop and they were able to exchange it for another, the same. They tried it in a Winchester and no problems. I have not had any problem with the replacement choke in my gun. I am still unable to work that one out. I use the American Lucas red gun oil on all of my chokes and the bolt rails on my auto's, also the ejectors of my other guns. It is a 'tacky' sort of oil which runs into the threads but was devised for use on machine guns and will withstand heat. I buy it from the bay and a bottle will last for years. It has proved to be an excellent product and a bit cheaper than most gun oils. Edited October 13, 2014 by Westley
