holloway
I have a freind with an Ithaca 10 ga with full choke (fixed) he is a bit nervous about putting 13/8 of steel bbs through it. My thoughts are that it will be fine, any experienced fowlers have a view ?
Big Mat
If he feels nervous about doing it, tell him not to. If you are not confident all is well you'll mess the shot up. Personally if it was my gun i probably would

birdsallpl
This topic has come up a number of times on this forum. It was recommended to Me by a barrel man in the Birmingham Gun quarter that to be on the safe side they should be opened to at least half choke. I will try and find the previous posts and put the link on.

motty
I would be doing more research before considering that! From an expert in steelshot. An expert? How so? Muncher, from this forum, had his chokes on his O/U 10 opened up to 3/4. He said it threw cracking patterns with BBB steel. My 10 is multi choke. I put T shot through a tight Terror. figgy
Depends how thick the barrel is and how thick at the choke. Why not have it multichoked, or opened to 3/4 then it's still good for lead. I'd put it through and keep an eye out for any damage to the choke, if it was marking I'd then get it opened up. motty
I think he meant, do some research, using an expert. Ok, got it now. I'm not sure there is such a thing as a steel shot expert. I'm no expert, but I've used enough steel shot, and I know many fowlers that have, to know that large steel pellets CAN be used through tight chokes. allanm
Its boils down to the man behind the trigger has to decide what he uses ,theres plenty Meat on the old mag 10 barrels I probably wouldn't advice it but I've put up to 5mm steel through mine with no problems Edited November 12, 2014 by allanm
kent
IMO and that all anyone can have on the subject, full choke isn't required or even desirable in steel as it will pattern tighter than lead with less fliers and contain more pellets per weight / size to fill out the bigger spread. I have my ten done tight half an slack half, the tight half barrel puts in fantastic 50 yard patterns with up to an including BBB the slack I try and load with no.2 as sometimes you will be faced with a short range chance and with the wind up its rear a goose cant half move! Non the less even with my no.2 home loads it seems to make geese at the same 50 yards very dead, often getting less penetration on the body but getting far more head and neck strikes. What do you risk with full besides the obvious of putting your most effective pattern further away from you? pressure bulges were the steel sits in a certain incompressible form as it passes through an over tight choke, possibly more than a bulge. Thickness of the steel is only partly relevant its also the grade of the steel used. All this might or might not occur in the life of the gun but I can 100% guarantee you will be faced with a few 25 yard shots at speeding geese you will miss or wound through being a bit too tight. Opening up to half still leaves the option to multi choke an obvious advantage with different loads and materials. I might in time do this as the ten is having a total re-build at present and wont see action again till next season If you want a tighter pattern further out yet have maybe taken out too much choke try using a shot-cup with less slits in it an other pattern tightening methods. As a confirmed steel shot user I should say its very possible to out-pattern the shots most effective and humane killing range, even with half. FatFreddysCat
Chart below indicates that there's a small improvement in using full with BB and BBB. Smaller shot seems to be less affected by choke.
