littlerob
Right I shot with my hushpower a lot go through 100 cartridges every to weeks keep seeing rats in the day about my yard near my sheds I be tempted shooting them but on the over hand dont want to damage sheds to much could I take out most of the lead and leave in say less than half on roll over crimp bit of weak masking tape to keep rest of lead in as I I was thinking of 15 - 20 yards and leaving in about 6g of shot to do the job of get the old spring air rifle out
ColinF
How about getting some 2" cartridges, they only have about 9g of shot in them?
littlerob
Did think of that but didnt have any in stock 2inch at the weekend thought I ask and see if I could make do and cheat by just removing half the shot
Underdog
Get some punctuation marks so I can draw breath lol. I don't recommend that bro. 2" is the way. Besides a few pin holes from shot not as bad as a rat infestation in my opinion! U.
Vince Green
a 2" 410 with ordinary sized shot will give you a ragged pattern with plenty of rat sized holes in it. The old way was with dust shot cartridges but I don't know if they still load them. Its a blinkin' expensive way to kill a rat! lee m
The way i was shown to do it was to put a tight bail in a suitable place as a backstop and bait in front of it with peanut butter for a couple of days so they get used to it, then you have a suitable backstop its best if you have a couple of these feeding stations. la bala
Years ago i new an old poacher. He would cut down a fourten cartridge, put 20 pellets back in, cut a star in the end of the case and fold back in. This old boy would go in the orchards with a torch tied to the barrel and come out with a sack full of selected pheasants.
Guest stevo
rob have a look at this like , the picture shows the same guns as us , with same choke . its 10 shots at 10 yrds I wouldn't worry about shot going everywhere haha got ta love the Mossberg ! picture taken from this post http://forums.pigeonwatch.co.uk/forums/topic/86896-the-underestimated-410/ Edited November 10, 2014 by stevo
malkiserow
Just use your air rifle to baited areas and stop worrying
hesstondriver
could you get some cartridges with smaller shot , = better pattun but less energy per pellet so less damage to sheds etc
dougall
i'd be surprised if you did much damage to sheds......unlikely to keep shooting same spot...9-11g 6s/7s enough to sort rat without felling trees.
richness
I shoot rats at just a couple of yards, near water pipes, wire and huts so I'm aware of this worry you have. My experience is that 7.5 or even better 8s are fantastic at giving you the full pattern you need and will do very surprisingly no damage at all to anything even at very close range. But 6s do so I'd steer clear of them. My preferred load is 20g Gambore low noise subs in 28 8 fibre. In 410 there was a skeet load of 9s but i can't recall the name off the top of my head
Westley
If it is that much of a problem, what about a 9mm 'garden gun' ?
littlerob
That would mean buying a garden gun as I dont have one have 3 .410's and and 4 12s Edited November 11, 2014 by littlerob
Underdog
I was shooting rats on a farm last night. Around cattle, calves, tractors and other expensive kit. .410+2" #6. Think I'm up to 100 killed now there. U.
fieldwanderer
could you get hold of some old conveyor belt to put along the sheds as a backstop? Shoot at an angle to it obviously but it's a thought
Richie10
Get a terrier and a smoker.

That take me back to my "naughty years" I would cut down a 2" cartridge leave 15 pellets in, a bit of newspaper on top and seal with wax , very effective at 3 yards

fieldwanderer
I thought such "vocations" were all but extinct until I found a pile of pheasant heads and offal on one of my permissions. Must admit, I've always viewed such things with admiration but have no stories to tell personally.
