rich1985
morning all. I've came from north norfolk to yorkshire to visit my sister, now I've made a few observations, in norfolk nearly every field that you look on will have a few pheasants milling about on etc, covercrops here and there and are common place. came to my sisters and I've seen 2 pheasants in 3 days and not a single cover crop? there are some fantastic hills etc about here and with a lump of cover on top would produce sport out of this world so why does it not seem to be happening? i may just be being thick and please tell me if i am! robbiep
Distance from population centres. For shoots, you need syndicate members or paying guns. Yorkshire is also a largely urban population, with a considerable proportion of asian immigrant population, for whom game shooting is utterly alien. Environmental legislation. You can't just go and plough up the top of a hill of upland grazing to plant a cover crop. You need to jump through various hoops first, and even then, with it being on top of a hill, it isn't going to take as well. I went to Wales once and the place I went to didn't have any mains water - I assume all Wales is like that? OP - Depends where you are in Yorkshire there loads of shoots where I am and even more north of York!

I lived on the outskirts of Huddersfield for 3 years while I was in polytechnic there in 1989-1992. I then moved to Sheffield, followed by Barnsley from 1992-1997 with work, followed by a small village outside York from 1997-2000. Any other smart-assed questions ? pontbeck
Ask anyone who's been to Warter priory what the shootings like in Yorkshire. There are numerable pheasant shooting estates in Yorkshire, not many in Huddersfield or Barnsley or Leeds for that matter.
rich1985
I was staying at my sisters which is out skirts of Huddersfield (berry brow or brockholes) I believe. Just seemed so much shooting countryside with not much shooting going on. It was mostly grazing land but there were a few cropped bits. Back in Norfolk now! Home sweet home! Scully
I think appearances can be deceptive really. Living where I do in Cumbria there isn't much land that isn't shot over, but it isn't even apparent from most B roads that they border a shoot. No feeders nor cover crops; just the occasional pheasant wandering about.
keg
Robbie, not sure where you are coming from ( with your comment, not geographically) I live in the suburbs of Leeds, not far from the airport, 3 shoots within 20 mins, Get north of Skipton and there are loads. In Industrial West Yorkshire there is the odd one or two, outside Sheffield there are are several, a cousin beats and picks up on a few. Your point on the Asian community is a valid one although we see a few groups at the clay club now and again.
demonwolf444
Depends where abouts you are, you are hard pressed to find land that is not either full time managed for gameshooting ( as in ran as a sporting estate either public or private ), part time managed for game shooting ( like a farmers and friends shoot ), syndicated ( Couple DIY shoots and some with full time or part time keepers), and then you have the little rough shoots around me. Ripon area of northyorkshire. Yorkshire in general is a big place.. Edited December 1, 2014 by demonwolf444

rich1985
Yes, did you open your eyes at all when you weren't in the middle of a town or city. Im going to Norwich tomorrow, will i see pheasants on the pedestrian precincts in town while i shop? Probably not but you will see far more game on the way to norwich than I saw all weekend at my sisters that's a fact.

rich1985
That's very interesting for future reference! When I went down last summer I saw a load lads meeting in a pub car park going clay shooting I believe. Would be nice to have a shot while at hers, not much for me to do when I'm there apart from feed the vermin in the garden! That's where I live, there is a shoot about 5 mins from there and several more within 20mins.also a 500 yard rifle range at brockholes I beleive. Martin g
Sounds like you were in the Golden Cock when you saw people meeting up for clay shoot at farnley tyas. The clay shoot is 1st and 3rd sunday each month. And there is a private syndicate shoot there too which I know very well. Also a lot of game shoots near Barnsley/Sheffield area..
