Albert Pierrepoint Saint or Sinner. What is the point of posting this topic? Its nothing to do with shooting and is a completely pointless waste of time and the sites bandwidth.

That's what Off Topic means.

its in the off topic section"Talk about things other than shooting" so no its not pointless especially when people obviously want to discuss it

Winston - thanks for the offer, but I am as informed as you. :innocent:

if you say so

Just been reading through some old posts(only just getting to grips with the site) and came across a few old posts and found some peoples thoughts regarding Capital Punishment (a hobby of mine studying it) and just wonder how people viewed Mr. Albert Pierrpoint saint or sinner i have read about him in depth, I believe him to be quite a remarkable man but still not sure whether he is saint or sinner.I realise many may have no idea who or what he was and this may be an age related topic.

If you care to look into the archives of this forum reff threads on capital punishment (the long drop method )you will find a compleat guide to capital punishment from the sentencing of a prisoner to his treatment in prison ,to his date in the execution shed and the disposal of the body . There was a very strict protocol that determined how a person should be treated and finally executed . There are many myths reff capital punishment and I can assure you that they are myths . Hanging done by a skilled hangman was a very quick and humane method of execution .

capital punishment in my eyes should be brought back be it a detterent or not,,

pierrepoint was good at his job which is basically what it was " a job " would I do it myself ? I don't really know if I could but with the dna evidence that they have today then I probably could, but how would I feel if I dropped an innocent man at the gallows ? that's the question that would cripple me, I would be devastated to hang an innocent man ,,it has been done in the past,

I would of hung Mr saville without batting an eyelid, also any others like him and I would not want paying to do it either,

I also at times think it should be brought back , its a very hard one to answer as I do not think it would ever act as a deterrent but I do think there should be a place for it in our laws,

pierrepoint was seriously affected by what he did even if he didn,t show it,, sinner definitely NO , saint also definitely NO

Whilst I would love capital punishment to be available, in reality I could not support its return as I dont trust plod and our judicial system enough to get it right every time,Google Stephan Kisko as an example, there have been far to many instances of wrongful prosecutions and down right set ups.as for pierrepoint his history shows he was erratic to say the least, and the strange thing was it seems his father was the driver in that he perfected I believe his technique and knot? rather worrying really.still at least the man understood gravity.

I read his autobiography a few years ago; an interesting read.

As others have said, just doing his job, if somewhat distasteful. From what I read he appears to have wanted to execute his job well with a quick and clean drop.

pretty sure there is no Knot involved rather a brass eyelet worked into the rope, the length of drop is determined from a chart http://www.capitalpunishmentuk.org/hanging2.html#tablebut the real skill came from the hangmans adjustments depending on his opinion of the man's (or womans) neck strength, Stephan Kisko is a wonderfull example of why we shouldnt, but theres a lot of reasons why maybe we should oooh to play God yippee lol
